Beyond Our Ken
Heard mentions in the past week or so of a possible glitch (could be multiple) on the R2 UK Boxset for this successful 2005 TV sci-fi from us nice folk in the UK, so maybe people are holding off buying it. Top show, really nicely made, though not as big in the budget department as American TV sci-fi. Seen some reviews online that show people may not necessarily react to it as positively as those of use used to its’ production values and style. Certainly selling well here, both as it has been arriving in individual volumes and now it’s around in a nice Tardis shape. Specifications should match, so expect 5.1 sound, commentaries and behind-the-scenes stuff galore. Retail price is recommended at $100, but the UK sets cheaper than this at around £40 - £45 or so (recommended at £65).

This is cool news for those who aren’t region free. I’m still on the fence about buying the R2 set. I’ve only seen two of the episodes and I want the whole series.
I have three concerns with the R2 set: 1) the shoddy and overly large TARDIS packaging (some have reported floaters and holders coming unglued in the post), 2) the authoring problem on one disc causing a chapter skip (although the BBC says they’ll replace the faulty discs, I don’t know if the courtesy will apply to people in the US), and 3) the possibility of the elimination of PAL speedup on the R1 set causing noticeable audio lag in this case.
I hope the details about the packaging are released within the next couple of weeks. With comparable pricing, I may simply buy the R2 set.

Well, what I’ve seen on Outpost Gallifrey is that the R1 set will have a simpler packaging, not the big TARDIS cube, so it won’t have the same issues as the R2 set. No idea about the glitches - hopefully they’ll have that fixed by the time they do the R1 set. The glitch can be got around by setting the DVD to play ALL and then skipping to the ep in question(rather than playing it from episode select screen.)
With the exchange rates and shipping being what they are, it’s not much of a savings to buy the R2 set. $100 is steep but there’s always sales...^_^
Now if they could just put the show on TV here, too…
