Ashes of Time
Well this is very interesting. Seems like waaaay back in the day, 1946 to be exact, Walt Disney and Salvador Dali were hanging out, kicking back and decided to work on a film together for the hell of it. The film was titled Destino and combined Walt’s animation skills with Dali’s surreal visuals. For some reason the film was never finished, shelved and pretty much forgotten until Roy Disney discovered it in 2003 and began work to have it finished. The results will be released on DVD in November as a part of the Walt Disney Treasures releases. Dvdactive.com has the scoop and further info.
This sounds very interesting indeed. Disney’s stuff was pretty wild at that time and to throw a crazy personality like Dali in the mix is like throwing a Mentos in a bottle of diet Coke (erupting, sweet and all over the place).

The way this is presented is not quite correct. The project was unearthed in 1999. It was finished in 2003, and was subsequently nominated for an Oscar (which it did not win). It’s an interesting piece, but mainly because of its history. The film itself is a little bit too polished and sanded down to really engage.

Sharkbait is right.
I saw this a few years ago at a Dali exhibition. What was discovered in the Disney-vaults back in 1999 was a treasure-trove of original sketches by Dali and some pre-visualization by him, and they (re)started this project based on that.
There was even talk about making it a segment for “Fantasia”, but that idea was dropped.
The end result is now more a what-if, and very “modest” when compared to works that were done by Dali himself.
Still it’s indeed interesting, and Dali completionists should be happy to have this on DVD.
Still, a very interesting piece
