Sad Vacation
With the American Film Market happening this week, Shochicku films has unveiled some new film profiles in their line-up at their english site for the event. Among the films on the list is Kitaro (working title) and it seems its going to be in the same vein as The Great Yokai Wars. Heres what they got:
A popular animation series and comic book is finally adapted into a live-action film for the first time using cutting edge CGI companies all over the world including Centro Digital Pictures (Kill Bill vol.1, vol. 2, Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) based in Hong Kong.
“Gegege No Kitaro” (original title) is directed by Katsuhide Motoki (Free & Easy series, Drugstore Girl) and stars Eiji Wentz (voice - Brave Story) from the popular duo, WaT, and renowned actor Yo Oizumi (voice - Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away).
Kitaro is a young specter (yokai) who lost his parents at birth. His father’s soul lives in one of his eyeball. Raised within the specter clan, Kitaro also keeps an eye on the human society, and fights the evil monsters in order to save the human beings from the threats from another world.
Sounds very interesting. For more info on the manga that the film is based on, go here. There is a official site but its not yet activated. It should be release sometime in 2007.

Mizuki Shigeru, who did the original Gegege no Kitaro manga, was part of the Kwai team of four major horror writers behind the development of The Great Youkai War, and did all the monster designs. The kid even visits the museum dedicated to his work at one point during the film, and he appears in the film as the head in the box near the end.
Horror-action is a little misleading; it was done in the sixties, and is a lot more playful and kid-oriented than that suggests.
This was originally announced with Tsutsumi (Trick) Yukihiko attached as director, but this no longer appears to be true.
Sad.

Thanks for the info, Andrew Cunningham. According to the Shochiku site, its listed under genre as “Action” and “Fantasy” so perhaps the film may take on a different tone from the manga. This is just speculation so I could be wrong. We’ll see when a trailer comes along....The part about Centro Digitial doing the SFX has got me interested, especially when dealing with monsters.

Good looking out on the official site. I wrote about this one back in May, June and July.

I’m a huge fan of the original manga and anime of Gegege no Kitaro. I’m surprised that the titles didn’t start getting translated and sold Stateside after The Great Yokai War.

The movie will be produced by Chihiro Kameyama, who brought us hits like “The Uchoten Hotel”, “Limit of Love”, “Bayside Shakedown” and more. Beside Shochiku, Fuji TV and Dentsu are also on board.
Does anyone know anything about the budget of “Kitaro”? That would be interesting.

Maybe because GREAT YOKAI WAR didn’t set the box office or DVD sales ranking on fire. At least there’s a DVD box of the anime series in Japan. We should be grateful for that.

I’m also a huge fan of the Fuji TV/Toei Animation 80s series and love the fact that another live action movie is being adapted from the series (there was a terrible low budget live action OVA movie released in 1987 (Yokai Kiden Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro - Mateki Eroizam [Ghostly Legend Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro - Demon Flute Eroizam]). I didn’t realize there were three other anime series based on the manga series beside the 80s series (1968, 1971, and 1996). I’m not too thrilled that Wenz Eiji (who also portrayed “Cobra Otoko” in the Kamen Rider remake last year)is set to star as Kitaro. If you have money to burn, the entire 108 episode series can be purchased in a box set for around 61589 yen (or roughly 599 US dollars).
