In the “if looks could kill” department, along comes Departyd, the sophomore venture of Chilean director Patricio Valladales (aka “Patovalla").  As Todd has already synopsized, Departyd—based on “Party” by Italian graphic novelist Andrea Cavaletto—involves stud magnet Miguel who seduces women to party with him.  Little do they know, however, that Miguel throws the “ultimate” party.  You want penetration?  You get it!  Though filming will not begin until, hopefully, December—though more realistically January—Patricio has offered up a gallery of glimpses into his demonic, misogynistic blood bath.  Beginning by butchering each others’ languages, Patricio and I discussed the upcoming production of Departyd.

Citing Takeshi Miike and David Cronenberg as influences, Patricio hopes to pay tribute to them with Departyd.  When asked specifically how he hoped to do this, Patricio extolled their brutal misogyny, the tension between metal and flesh that veers into surreal horror, scored with cool music.  Patricio qualifies that—though brutalizing females is not necessary for horror—it’s director’s choice; like Gaspar Noe’s Irreversible (with whom Patricio has been in contact), or the films of Dario Argento, or again Cronenberg.

Patricio’s first film Curriculum—which he describes as a violently verbal thriller in the surreal camp of Alejandro Jodorowsky with a touch of the poetry of Gus Van Sant—has yet to make the rounds, though Patricio is negotiating with Unearthed Films to put it out on DVD, with chances being it might end up released in Japan first.  Notwithstanding, Curriculum drew the attention of Miami producer Peter Engert of Stone Bridge Films who has stepped in to help produce Departyd.

Working once again with actor Serge François Soto—who Patricio describes as “fantastic, sick, macabre” in his portrayal of Domingo Guzman—Patricio is likewise negotiating with Danny Trejo (Machete) to play the role of the detective.  Trejo has expressed interest but nothing is in writing as of yet.  Keep your fingers crossed.
