Ashes of Time (Redux)
One could ask themselves which upcoming project is more Barton Fink-esque, Darren Aronofsky‘s The Wrestler or David Mamet‘s Redbelt. Considering Mamet‘s playwright-turned-screenwriter-turned-director career, I give him the leg-up. Redbelt is a mixed martial arts drama starring the compulsively watchable Chiwetel Ejiofor along with Mamet stalwarts Ricky Jay, Joe Mantegna and David Paymer, which at first seems to be burdened with the oddball casting choice of Tim Allen. The Spanish Prisoner and Steve Martin‘s performance therein gives me hope that Allen will not be an albatross around this pictures neck. The trademark hard edge and razor-snap dialogue is all there, and there is no sign of any of Mamet‘s wives in the picture; Brit beauty Emily Mortimer and City of God‘s Alice Braga aim to spice up the fight-club scene.
Redbelt is set for limited release in North American for April 25, 2008.

This actually looks surprisingly good.
I mean, as much as I love William H. Macy, Edmond looked like Mamet’s usual recent bouts of flinging shit and calling it wit (yes, that pun was intended; it’s on the level of Mamet’s recent humor).

“There has to be a gimmick.”
WHY WHY WHY does there have to be a gimmick??
So LAME. And I speak as a fan of both Mamet and of MMA.
