Happy Birthday to me!! Happy Birthday to me!!! I had the Barnabus Collins model kit, the Dark Shadows board game and learned how to whistle using the creepy synth theme. And I’m not the only one. The toothy guy on the left has the right to sing to himself.

Dark Shadows remains, dare I say it, more popular than Buffy. Did I just pull a John lennon? let me know what you think. Buffy ain’t forty years old, nor did Dark Shadows have the benefit of nifty sepcial effects, a big budget and -oh yeah, EDITING! This was a live TV show for cryin’ out loud and people still watch it!!!

The real genius of the show was the way it laid the ground for the vampire as tortured soul media that followed. Buffy, Angel, Interview With A Vampire, even Blade as well as many, many others vampire story arcs owe their souls to the crazy soap opera vision of producer director Dan Curtis. Who was also the director of the best authorized version of Dracula yet starring Jack Palance. Curtis passed away last March but he left us Trilogy of Terror, The Night Stalker and one of the most influential horror TV series o all time..

So Happy Birthday to Dark Shadows holder of the record for most episodes of a TV show available- over 1000! Thanks MPI Home Video for continuing to make them available. The last box set streets September 26.

Yeeeeesh. This makes me feel old. I remember rushing home from school to catch the late afternoon broadcasts of “Dark Shadows.”

It was a great show in the late 60’s and early 70’s and still holds up today. I was a faithful viewer of dark Shadows then and later on the Sci Fi channel until it was canceled. Now I am collecting the series on DVD. Looking forward to the new audio stories too!
