Ever get the feeling of Deja Vu? In a instance of life imitating art, it looks like the Strangers (er, well, Alex Proyas and Co.) are giving Dark City a make-over (both in special effects and sound design) with a possible thrusting into theatres for a re-release. Now I sound like I’m repeating an article from Swarez from last year, especially considering it is the screenwriter David Goyer giving some big promises with no dates attached.
If you don’t glance over at the sidebar there and check out the feed from Bloody Disgusting (and you should), it bears repeating that this will be a different cut of the movie on top of the technical improvements. And when this new version plays out in a few big cities (likely along the lines of the recent Alien and Blade Runner re-release) it will end up with a fully loaded Blu-Ray disc. It’s been some time since the initial DVD release of Dark City (long enough that it was the first DVD purchase I ever made, back in the Summer of 1998!) Here’s hoping there is some rapidity to follow Mr. Goyer’s words.
And here is hoping for the removal of that unnecessary voice over introduction at the beginning of the film (arguably the original films only (very minor) flaw). The cult can handle the movie without hand-holding this time around.

Removing the opening narration is the main reason I want this so bad. I feel it ruins the movie for first time viewers, completely. When ever I show it to someone I want to skip it.
So yeah this is good news.

I’m not so immediately keen on the ‘special effects’ revamp, but removing the voicover and tightening/loosing a few clumsy cuts can only be a good thing.
Plus, seeing Dark City on the big screen would be a dream come true for me.

i was never a fan of the mind-force effect. should have been completely invisible. but removing the voice-over is one of the things which was promised afaik/r.

I like the mind force effect. Main reason I can’t wait for this is because the dvd release of Dark City is rubbish, I just want a new well put together copy I can buy. Same with The Crow and Grosse Pointe Blank and all the other rubbish first-gen dvd releases.

Funny, I always considered the performance of a certain mister Kiefer Sutherland to be the out and out movie ruiner. In my opinion he made the movie completely unwatchable...what with the old Igor 2000 schtick. I can still remember how baffled I was in the theaters. For me it is arguably one of the stand-out worst pieces of acting I can recall in any film of otherwise decent merit.

Loved the mind effect, especially loved the supporting case: Connelly, Hurt, Sutherland (yes, I liked the twitchy Igor schtick...it was great!)

I always liked Richard O’Brien in DARK CITY. He was appropriately creepy.

Awful film getting a re-boot. I love Hollywood. Milking dead cows.

I saw the movie last year in a theater, and there were definitely a few effects shots that were very obvious models. I’m not as sure I’m down with the recut; I think there’s not a wasted frame, and it’s one of the best edited films around.
