We have talked about this before but we have never had a concrete date or even if it was true that a director’s cut of Alex Proyas‘ cult film Dark City was on its way. Writer David S. Goyer had talked about the new cut but nothing was set in stone regarding a release. But today I stumbled across an ad in Home Media Magazine online which confirms that the film is indeed on its way on to DVD and Blu Ray on the 29th of July. Yay!
So far no word on a theatrical re-release that many had hoped for but keep those fingers crossed and ready on the pre-order button when that arrives at your favorite online store.

Is the BR a region A or B release (maybe both)?

Since it’s a catalog title it will most likely be region free. But New Line usually region lock their newest titles but Warner, who recently bought New Line don’t region lock their Blus so I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
I’m sure that a Region B release is not far behind though.

This movie makes me want to slowly strangle Keifer Sutherland to death.

by the way, the release date will be EXACTLY 10 years after the first one

Excuse me for not being up to date, but what changes are likely to be made? Presumably the dreadful, spoilerific and studio-enforced narration at the start of the movie will be gone and the film will start with Rufus Sewell waking up in the bath? Anything else? Love the movie btw.

Indeed a pretty good question… I really wonder what’s there that could be improved. Some might say, that there might be told a bit more about the origin of the strangers, which would be the only eminent point i could think of.

According to Goyer there have been changes made to the narrative, the voiceover removed and some of the FX have been tweaked as well.

Call it the Flat Line Cinema Platinum Plus Director’s Edition and I’m there. Actually, I’m there anyway. DARK CITY rules.
