Rogue Pictures Presents THE UNBORN Now Playing

Todd may use his almighty editor-in-chief superpowers to smite me for posting something which is not strictly news on the main-page. This is a one-stop shopping place for what Cory McAbee is up to at the moment.
Cory McAbee you may say? He is none other than the genius frontman of the avant-garde/performance-show/rock-spectacular Billy Nayer Show, and responsible for one of the best American Cult films of the past few years: The American Astronaut (Todd’s Full review here, My capsule review here)
While McAbee is still touring and there is no sign of a follow-up to American Astronaut at this time, he has been appearing as an actor in several films. You’ve got to love a guy who’s been playing characters with names like Mr. Salty and Spanky Williams…
Current Projects:
Charlie the Ox: A Serio-comic look at a safecracker that is in the profession for the fun of it, not the money. McAbee Co-stars with Coen Brothers Favorite, Jon Polito. The film picked up prizes at Telluride, The New York Independant Film Festival and Cinequest. Nice Review here.
The Guatemalan Handshake: Too low-budget weird to really figure out what is going on. There is a synopsis to the effect of “A mysterious power failure in a small mountain town coincides with the disappearance of one of its most eccentric young residents. Mystery piles upon mystery as his family and friends search for him, fail, and ultimately try to forget about him – an undertaking that results in many unexpected, and in some cases bizarre, effects on the town’s already peculiar community.” However, the same page is prefaced with “Note: Most of this information on this page is purposefully misleading and inaccurate.” Trailer one is surreally backwards. Trailer two is only slightly more straight-forward, the last shot feels a bit Wes Anderson-y. Trailer three a complete non-sequitor.
Land of the Blind: Featuring a more known cast (Donald Sutherland, Ralph Fiennes, Lara-Flynn Boyle) and filmed in London, England. The only information on this project at the moment came from the Hollywood Reporter last year: “the story of a prisoner who recounts his life as a soldier turned political dissident and his eventual role in the overthrow of his unnamed country’s totalitarian government. Fiennes will play the narrator, Joe, a guard at a notorious prison housing the famous political prisoner, a playwright named Thorne (Sutherland). Thorne leads a group involved in waging a game of warfare and terrorism against the government, a brutal and sadistic dictatorship.”
And one last FYI: A collection of short films, Billy Nayer Show: The Early Years, has been available on DVD for some time.

Nice ... more McAbee is a good thing. I swapped emails with one of the BNS guys after writing my review of American Astronaut and he told me that they’ve got two scripts prepped, so there will be more BNS films in the near future ...

Put me first in line for any new BNS films.

Hey, I’d see The Guatamalan Handshake based on that third trailer alone ... throat singing and baton twirling ... how far wrong can you go?

the world of McAbee alone is far too large for anyone to contemplate. he’s created a universe within his own imagination. he’s been a huge inspiration for me as well as the rest of my band. can’t wait to get the early years films.
