Laputa: Castle in the Sky
I thought that Always: Sunset on Third Street was one of the best films of 2006. It was funny, amazing to look at and made me cry like a girl. It shamelessly tugged on every string in your body but did it so well that it’s become one of my all time favorites. The film was a big hit in Japan and of course a sequel was kicked in to gear shortly after it swept most of the Academy awards in its country.
I haven’t heard much in terms of story in the sequel but we do know that the King of the Monsters, Godzilla, makes an appearance in a couple of scenes. The new design for Godzilla, fully CGI this time, is one of the best I’ve seen, more reminiscent of Suzuke Kaneko’s Godzilla rather than Ishiro Honda’s original design.
A scene has appeared online (actually a month ago) that features the big G’s attack on Tokyo. It looks bad ass and it makes me wonder why none of the official Godzilla films looked this good. You can get a glimpse of Godzilla himself near the end of the clip and listen to Ifukube’s iconic score through the destruction.
The DVD hits the stores on the 21st this month so be sure to check that out as well.

That’s a pretty cool scene (opening the movie).

Yeah, that’s pretty amazing. I’m sure we’ll see a Godzilla movie from ToHo done similar to this one day.

Isn’t there a little Godzilla in all of us?

I wish somehow we can go back in time and redo the American Godzilla, more along the lines of this, but with some Cloverfield production values and techniques, just not AS shaky as Clvrfld and minus the Giant Iguana approach, and more the GODZILLA:unstoppable-force-of-nature-approach.
For as much as I enjoyed Cloverfield, and the beast itself, I couldn’t help but yearn for Godzilla to be behind such wonderfully paced chaos and destruction, (yeah, I yearn)
This looks like it’s doing exactly that. Only thing is, it’s not exactly a Godzilla movie.

Is the first Always really that good? I honestly couldn’t stomach the cheesiness of the first 20 minutes or so of it..

What the heck is going on? Looking at the previous film, it appears to be fairly straightforward melodrama. This is… Godzilla?

The director of the Always films is a special effects guy (both are loaded with effects shots to set the period). He’s a hug G fan and this appearance is part of a dream had by one of the main characters.
