Rogue Pictures Presents THE UNBORN Now Playing

Film institute websites can be your best friend when running a site like this but they can also be your worst enemy. They’re an invaluable source of English language info on regional films but sometimes they do a less than stellar job of representing what it is they’ve actually got. Case in point: Hella Joof’s Linas Kvällsbok (Bitter Sweetheart), a title I’ve spotted on the SFI website many times before now but passed over thanks to a very uninspired choice of still shot and a extremely cursory synopsis. Here’s what we’ve got:
Based on a popular novel Joof’s film is a dark coming of age comedy following a fifteen year old girl. Which is standard enough stuff and has been done stacks of times and spun in countless directions but done well it’s still a potent formula and the trailer for this is just stellar. Camera work is great, the young cast likable, and Joof clearly remembers just how absurd and confusing being a teenager can be. Put it this way: you’ll come for the naked skating but you’ll stay for the glass table vomit.

Looks funny, and of course Swedish girls are cute. Is this playing anywhere or is there a subtitled DVD available?
