Cain’s Descendant
I posted here about a month ago, just shy of the release of Lee Evans latest stand-up performance DVD, saying that the man had just set a record for the largest audience for such a gig - over 10k people in one room {Twitch Post]. Amazingly physical comedian, very popular, and he has released such shows before. I can’t quite put my finger on why this is suddenly beating everything once again - not because I don’t think he isn’t good enought for that kind of happening - it’s just odd : he has been around a while, but not too long.
It’s great then that Evans has snapped up the No.1 selling DVD this Xmas in the UK for his ‘XL Tour’ show - and this has been a huge period for such DVD (and Video) releases especially for the time of year for 20 years or so. Sold almost half a million in a month, half of that in the past week alone, and played to a quater of a million people on the tour. That’s simply huge, beats any phenomenon for comedy on DVD I can think of here in the UK - The Office and Phoenix Nights managed something like half that quantity in initial sales (maybe in their first week), so this is at least comparable in popularity. Yes, again it’s worth stating that popular doesn’t necessarily mean good : it does here though. Very good indeed. [Source : Chortle].

Does it mean anything when I say that this name really doesn’t ring a bell at all? Maybe I’ve just been too out of touch with Brit tv comedy for the last 6 years or so. Haven’t tracked any recent shows for a very long time, but even stand up....not familiar at all.

check IMDB : you will see evans has also done some film stuff, including ‘theres something about mary’, but yes you would be right in saying he’s a stand-up comic primarily and although you may not have heard of him (popular for the last decade maybe?), he is someone worth looking into (cant find an official site with clips) if youre brave enought to blind buy stuff on recommedation…

have they ever shown any of his stuff on Comedy Central? Just curious if he’s been featured in their stand up series. I buy a lot of stuff blindly, but they tend to be features.

i dont know, never really seen comedy central. am in the UK myself you see, and comedy is a large majority of what i have prior knowledge and experience of, being that most of what i watch is this kind of thing… ive seen a few previous shows filmed for video / DVD releases by lee evans and he stands out as one of the most popular (if not the most popular) almost purely stand-up based comedians : advantage is he has also had a few films roles people might know him from, but without ever having seen his do his normal stuff… theres some connection in what he does to the kind of comedy in ‘theres something about mary’ in that theyre a modern physical (to some extent) comedy too… i like him, quite traditional, quite odd at the same time. remember, the post is also to point out whats selling well on DVD at the moment here - and that this kind of ‘recorded for the xmas market’ release is a trend here…

Just noticed that trend re: the new Muse concert DVD. Probably pick that one up though. thanks for the info though—btw. how does he fall along the scale of “decency” (how best to describe it???)—Billy Connelly and Rowan Atkinson are the only Brit standup I can remember listening to recently.

‘decency’ as in rudeness? not particularly rude, generally not rude at all - but its not
intentionally ‘adult’ (rude for the sake of it) and its not intentionally ‘lowest common denominator’ - i suppose 15+ years of age would be a good marker… thats the one advantage of the bbfc certificates… thats what they gave it (http://www.bbfc.co.uk : click ‘search’).

as for other stand-up stuff people around here would like, i would suggest dylan moran (latest for £7 or so at amazon.co.uk) of ‘black books’ fame (actually a stand-up for many years prior to the show - as is...), bill bailey, sean lock is simply stunning (this ones an audio CD), and eddie izzard should be well known now for film stuff and he was probably the biggest seller on VHS through the late 90s / early 00s… stand-ups not as popular in terms of DVD sales, or as obvious in its talent i suppose. peter kay sells very well, other big sellers are pretty naff - largely i would recommend TV shows of sitcoms more than anything else…
