We’ve written in the past about the Cinema 16 series of short film collections and the series returns with a collection titled simply World Short Films that may very well boast the most recognizable collection of names yet on this impressive, eclectic series.  Who’s involved?  Guillermo Del Toro, Park Chan Wook, Andrea Arnold, Sylvain Chomet, Alfonso Cuaron, Guy Maddin, Jane Campion, Alexander Sokurov, and while you may not recognize the film makers’ names you’ll certainly have heard us talking about stunning Canadian stop motion short Madame Tutli-Putli in these pages if you’ve spent much time around here at all.

Of the included works some are well known and established already – Arnold’s Wasp was the vehicle that catapulted her to fame, for example – while others represent early looks at film makers who would later go on to become major forces in the world, such as the inclusion of the second ever short film from Alfonso Cuaron, shot when he was only eighteen years old.

With such a variety of films it’s inevitable that transfer quality varies some from piece to piece but the best possible sources are used throughout and the material is handled well, making sure that the films look as good as they possibly can.  And, best of all, as with earlier entries in the series this volume includes as many director commentaries as they were able to round up which means if you want to hear Park, Del Toro, Cuaron, Chomet or others talk about their work you have just been handed a golden opportunity.

The lineup is stellar, the presentation excellent, by my count there are at least seven shorts included in this set that would be worth the purchase cost all on their own.  What more can you ask?
