Rogue Pictures Presents THE UNBORN Now Playing

It was only inevitable that, after the incredible success of last year’s 장밋빛 인생 (Life in Pink) on TV, Choi Jin-Shil would return to the big screen. But the key was when, and with what kind of project. She’s been apparently looking at scripts since last Fall, but finally decided what her long awaited return to Chungmuro will be.
Choi has been cast as the lead in 실종 (Disappearance), which will be her first film since 2000’s 단적비연수 (Legend of Gingko). The thriller stars Choi as Hye-Jung, an owner of a small pension in an isolated Island, who suddenly changes from a gentle woman into the kind of psycho witch you’d find in fairy tales like Hansel & Gretel. But the basic idea for this story is something much more real and serious, the 1991 ‘Frog Boys’ accident in Daegu, when five schoolboys suddenly disappeared (their remains were found in 2002). They were called 개구리 소년 (frog boys) as the last time people saw them, they said they were going out to catch frogs. This was a case similar to the one used as the basis for 살인의 추억 (Memories of Murder), as the police spent years looking for the kids, whose bodies were found in the mountains near Daegu, revealing they were in fact murdered. Although the film will not necessarily stick to the real life accident (we’re dealing with 4 boys instead of 5, and an Island instead of Daegu), the tone should be similar to Bong Joon-Ho’s film.
Although as the rest of the cast and even the director haven’t been announced we can’t really predict how this film will turn out, it’s certainly an interesting new challenge for Choi, who has never played this kind of character. The film will start shooting in June.
