Rogue Pictures Presents THE UNBORN Now Playing

Prachya Pinkaew’s ass-whuppin’ latest Chocolate has been a film in high demand from the day word first trickled out that the director of Ong Bak had landed himself a young female star to take up the martial arts mantle. The film won a lot of love from martial arts fans on the international fest circuit and it appeared like a US release was imminent when word came out that the Weinstein Company had pre-bought the film, presumably for release via their Dragon Dynasty imprint. But somewhere along the line something went wrong, the deal fell apart, and the film dropped into limbo.
But no more. Word is out that Magnolia Pictures have stepped in and bought up North American rights to the picture and will be releasing it in North America via Magnet Releasing with a theatrical release to come sometime in 2009. More details as we get them. Check the trailer below the break and reviews at the links below. The full press release is below the break.
Magnet (http://www.magnetreleasing.com) announced today that it has acquired North American rights to Prachya Pinkaew’s martial arts actioner CHOCOLATE. Fresh from its successful Toronto Midnight Madness world premiere, the film rolled into Austin’s Fantastic Fest this past weekend and nabbed the Audience Award runner-up prize.
ONG BAK: THE THAI WARRIOR helmer Prachya Pinkaew’s latest pairs him with newcomer Jeeja Vismistananda, in training for five years to play the lead in CHOCOLATE. Jeeja’s performance as an autistic girl who learns Muay Thai via a marathon screening of Tony Jaa and Bruce Lee films announces the addition of a major new talent to the martial arts canon. Featuring death-defying stunts, and a charming newcomer, CHOCOLATE represents Prachya’s proper follow-up to the smash success of ONG BAK.
“Magnet has had a long tradition of debuting action stars like Tony Jaa, Dan Chupong, David Belle, Marko Zaror, and now we’re fortunate enough to launch our first female action star: Jeeja Vismistananda. CHOCOLATE proves Jeeja is as hard hitting as the big boys and fans will be delighted by Prachya’s (ONG BAK’s creator) return to kick ass action,” said Magnolia Senior Vice President Tom Quinn.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia’s Quinn with Gilbert Lim representing Sahamongkolfilm International. Magnet will release the film theatrically in 2009.

Unless they retitle it like DISTRICT B13 or release the cut version like they did with ONG BAK. Aren’t we still waiting on TRIANGLE from Magnet as well?

The one really terrific thing about this is that its not getting released by Regent Releasing, the people that released CTHULHU in America only in like three cities, none of which were NY.
I watched the film and it wasn’t good but it had promise and some genuine potential but yeah, when you’re releasing a Lovecraft pastiche and not even bothering giving it a release in the Two Boots in NY, you’re in trouble. Shame because no indie film deserves that kind of fate.
Oh and as for Magnet: yeah, we kinda /are/ still waiting for TRIANGLE but I saw that on the big screen and lemme tell ya, I wouldn’t hold my breath for that film. Oh and they’re also FINALLY releasing TIMECRIMES in December on the big screen at the Landmark Sunshine. This makes me curb my tongue and fold my hands neatly and wait.
