If you haven’t checked it out already head on over to Kaiju Shakedown and read excerpts of an interview Grady did with Chilean martial artist Marko Zaror. We’re quite fond of his two movies Kiltro and Mirage Man and you should be to. Head on over and read Marko Zaror on Bruce Lee.

Marko seems like a really likeable guy, and in the interview, he clearly has a love for martial arts and martial arts filmmaking. I’m looking forward to Mirage Man, but I honestly thought Kiltro was a huge letdown. I don’t think he had the screen charisma that you see in people like Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan, and the story itself was pretty silly. And when the action finally kicked in, the editing and silly effects took away from the visual impact. Still, I give him the benefit of the doubt!

Marko is a great guy...I had a chance to meet him 2 weeks ago during the New York Comic-Con. He is very serious about his martial arts training and film career. I had a chance to talk with him for about 10-15 minutes on the convention floor. I took pics with Marko and the director Ernesto Diaz Espinosa and included them in a piece I did on Marko a few Days ago-

At least somebody out there cares!  There are too many jaded action stars out there these days.  I’ll take Kiltro (huge letdowns and all) over Rush Hour any day.  I know Marko Zaror probably isn’t the only guy out there with this level of passion (just look at Donny Yuen), but I still think its refreshing.  It may take a few tries, but his masterpiece will come.

Having seen both films i can say I prefer Mirage Man to Kiltro. Unfortunately I watched Kiltro after MirageMan. I pinned it down to style. Kiltro tries too hard to be a big budget kind of actioner while Mirage Man has a raw off the cuff feel to it. I think when it comes to martial arts for me it has to have that rawness, that lack of polish to really give it a sense of realism. Now that we see films where the actors go all out and look like they really are fighting for their lives that the films that look polished and honed no longer have that desired ‘OOMPH’. Mirage Man plays a whole lot better than Kiltro.
Still, I agree about the passion part. ONLY Martial Artists should have martial arts films.
