Just took a gander over at KaijuShakedown and Grady is reporting distressing news. Todd spent all that time praising what should have been a remarkably decent release of an Asian action movie and the manufacturer of the disc has made some changes and cancelled some of the features. First let’s recap what Todd reported…

* Commentary with Donnie Yen and Hong Kong Expert Bey Logan
* Born to be Bad: Interview with Martial Arts Legend Sammo Hung
* First Amongst Equals: Featurette with Star and Action Director Donnie Yen
* Echoes of Darkness: Interview with co-star Simon Yam
* A Dragon Rising: Interview with SPL villain Jackie Wu
* A Man Apart: Interview with Director Wilson Yip
* Never Seen Before Footage
* SPL Making Of Documentary
* Breaking News: Footage from Hong Kong Press Conference for launch of SPL
* Trailer Gallery
* Master in Motion: Martial Arts demonstration by Wu Shu impressario Jacki Wu

According to an e-mail from a KS reader, an e-mail was sent out to those who pre-ordered the disc through HKFlix. Here are the changes…

Valued Customers-
Thanks for your pre-order of the new “SPL” (“Killzone”) DVD at HKFlix.com! We are writing to inform you of some changes that have been made to this DVD since you made your purchase. We were notified of these changes today by the manufacturer:

1. The main audio commentary track may or may not include Donnie Yen. But it will still feature Bey Logan as previously advertised.
2. The “Never Seen Before Footage” feature has been cancelled.
3. The “Breaking News: Footage from Hong Kong Press Conference” feature has been cancelled.
4. The “Martial Arts Demonstration By Jackie Wu” feature has been cancelled.
5. The following two new “Anatomy Of A Scene” Featurettes have been
added:
a) “Alleycats” (With optional commentary by action director, Donnie Yen, and Bey Logan)
b) “Challenge of the Masters”

Both featurettes are supposed to have optional audio commentary by Donnie Yen AND Bey Logan, but this is subject to change.

The artwork will also be changed, and will be updated on our site within the next few days. All the other features previously advertised are still correct.”

So even though some of these cuts I can understand [hands up anyone else itching to watch the press conference footage?] it is still sad to read that the Wu Jing and Never Before Seen Footage will be cut. Boo-urns.

    Valued customers -

    Everything, has been cancelled.

  2. Tom 08/01/2006 @ 6:47am

    Hrm… what a surprise.

  3. ChrisP 08/01/2006 @ 6:47am

    So they rename the movie; don’t release it in theatres as previously hyped; hype the DVD release up with loads of excellent extras; then cancel all the good stuff? Ur… OK? Like Kevin Smith said: in Hollywood, people fail upwards. By the way, “Challenge of the Masters”? What’s with the f’n 70’s kung fu movie titles?

  4. bitches. 08/01/2006 @ 6:58am

    Death to the Weinsteins!

  5. Pelle 08/01/2006 @ 7:13am

    I believe that, with the new company, we have a chance to reinvent our brand in a more positive light, as far as the Asian fan community is concerned. That’s something we’re totally committed to.

    -Bey Logan

    Why sweet talk us with some impressive special features, and then withdraw them? :(

    Good thing the interviews and commentary are still there.

    Btw, can you shed some light on the reason behind the namechange? Killzone sounds f***ing stupid, sorry.

  7. Elliot of Tokyomonsters 08/01/2006 @ 9:21am

    ...That is so disappointing.

    Why am I not surprise that American companies always screw us over?

  9. Quoc Nguyen 08/01/2006 @ 1:20pm

    Oh god how retarded can these companies get, and I agree what the hell is up with the name change Killzone sounds like a retarded roller coaster ride, and only makes the movie seem cheap. And with the extras… that’s just lame. Way to take an awesome movie and f*** it up.

  10. Swarez 08/01/2006 @ 4:00pm

    Did Logan leave HK legends to work with the Weinsteins? If so then it’s a damn shame that he did if this is the outcome.

  11. logboy 08/02/2006 @ 12:24pm

    logan’s taking a bashing over this. fine, it may not be his fault per se, but he’s signed to the company and he seems to have been defending weinstein policies in recent times - wonder how he is feeling, deep down inside, right now? its a complete cock-up : the company names not right, the bad policies of old are not just still in practice theyre postiviely getting the best work-out theyll ever have had, and logan’s sold his reputation (reputation for what, in film or DVD terms, i have no measure of it myself - i don’t listen to commentaries or read much press online) for a bit of cash and now it’s making him and everyone involved in this company look daft, dumb, blind.

    all the positive opporunities that DVD offered (and still offers) are having so much more effort being clamped down upon by companies rather than positively exploited - where’s the online promotion, the careful appropriate marketing, the speedy work, the consideration for the history, the fans and so on?... even basic business practive evades most labels and film companies, the bare bones absolute essential never-to-be-ignored beginners lessons utterly walked past, lost. shocking.

    its not a fanboy issue, its become one because of the reappearance of the same petty mistakes and the inability for us to get past what’s out of our control…

  12. Ian 08/03/2006 @ 1:43pm

    It wouldn’t surprise me if the cancelled extras have been purposely held back to bulk up a Hi-def release at some point in the future.

  13. Bob Violence 08/06/2006 @ 12:42pm

    Looks like Grady might’ve spoken too soon...

  14. Skitzo 08/06/2006 @ 4:56pm

    As long as the movie itself isn’t fucked with….
