Rogue Pictures Presents THE UNBORN Now Playing

I’ll freely admit that I am a fan of M. Night Shyamalan. Yes, the man has a mildly embarrassing over-reliance on big Surprise Twists but he also shoots some gorgeous film and tends to layer some interesting subtext into his scripts. That said for some reason I just couldn’t muster a lot of enthusiasm for the news a couple days back that he was setting up a new film - The Lady in the Water - over at Warner Brothers. That is, until now.
Variety has just announced that Paul Giamatti and Bryce Howard will be playing the lead roles. Howard was by far the best thing going in The Village and Giamatti is simply an outright genius who has been jobbed by the Oscars two years in a row now ... I’d go see this on the basis of cast alone pretty much regardless of who the director is but put those two with a guy who writes intelligent scripts and who I still believe will land at least a few major technical awards before he’s done and I’m there with bells on. Tinkle, tinkle.
Now hopefully someone at Warners will convince him that he’s a good enough writer to drop the whole twist ending angle ... and I have no idea what this film means for his long rumored adaptation of The Life Of Pi, which had been widely touted as his next film ...

The movie is to have a July 2006 release.
Basic premise is - a superintendent (Paul Giamatti) for an apartment complex discovers a rare type of water nymph (Bryce Dallas Howard) in the building’s swimming pool.
“‘Lady in the Water’ is a personal movie with a big idea, and it seems just perfect for Warner Bros. I’m thrilled they responded to the story, and we all can’t wait to get started.” - M. Night Shyamalan

I’m with you on your thoughts on Shyamalan, Todd. Very talented filmmaker who’s in danger of letting his “nitch” overtake him. Let’s hope this new one won’t be the show-offy ego-fest that “The Village” was. (The only one of his “twisty super-natural” movies that I didn’t like!)
Giamatti = Great news!

Sounds like a remake of MERMAID IN A MANHOLE…
In all seriousness I like Shyamalan quite a bit, and am looking forward to this - his casting has been spot-on in his other projects and this one looks to be no exception.

I am a huge fan of all of Shymalan’s films (including the village) and don’t know if I can wait a whole year! I think most people who trash him are afraid to open thier minds and hearts to some of his ideas. It’s not “corney” to belive that things can’t happen if they haven’t already. I love that he makes us dream of “what if’s”. Most people stop thinking that at9. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WATCH ONE OF HIS FILMS TO GET THAT FEELING BACK!

M. Night Shyamalan is a great story teller. I enjoy his films because he uses ordinary aspects of life in his stories. With him less is more. I can’t wait until “The Lady in The Water” is released.

Look, I’m a fan of Shyamalan too. But, for Pete’s sake, can he please stop putting himself in his movies. He’s a bad actor. Let’s face it. Yeah, sure, he writes his own stuff, but if he wants the legacy shared by the greats (Hitchcock, Speilberg, etc.) then it would be in his best interest to stop rubbing himself in our faces - he already does enough of that with his excessive stylization. It’s time to let go of Freshman year in film school, Shamy…

I would go see anything with Paul Giamati in it. Adding “midnight” Shyamalan to the mix as director further enhances Paul’s chances of an another award-worthy performance, let’s hope he doesn’t get “robbed” again. Looking forward to another thriller from the killer (director). I don’t mind if he puts himself in his movies, it’s kind of quirky and it always brings out a silent chuckle.
