Cannes. Line-Up. Read. (Updated, Too.)

Announced today, the line-up opens with Wong Kar Wai’s My Blueberry Nights; David Fincher’s Zodiac had been rumored to close the event, but it gained a competition slot and instead Canadian director Denys Arcand’s L’Age des Tenebres gets the nod.

Competition titles include the latest from Catherine Breillat, Julian Schnabel, Fatih Akin, the Coens, James Gray, Emir Kusturica, Carlos Reygadas, Bela Tarr, Gus Van Zant, and more. Two Asian titles made the competition: Mogari No Mor by Japan’s Naomi Karuse and Secret Sunshine by South Korea’s Lee Chang-dong. Gala screenings of work by Michael Moore, Steven Soderbergh, and Michael Winterbottom will be featured.

Un Certain Regard, midnight, special screenings, tributes, classics, cinefondation and short screenings were also announced. Details as they arrive. (UPDATE: Link to list below). Midnight features Olivier Assayas, Abel Ferrara, and one by Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington.

    Oooh, the new Zvyagintsev film debuts here!  I’m screening his astonishing debut film THE RETURN in my regular screening series tonite.

    Looking Forward to hearing about the New Coens, Wong Kar Wai, Gus FVan Sant and Fatih Akin films. That’s a good lineup for the official competition, but with Cannes, the sidebars often are treasure troves of interesting cinema.

    Actually, wait, we’re not just missing Greenaway. Medem, Andersson, Roeg and Hou are absent too. I’m disappointed (though it does look good).

    “Death Proof” is a ridiculous inclusion.

    Thanks for the update, Peter. I’m pleased to learn that Lee Chang-dong’s “Secret Sunshine” (Milyang) made it into the competition, and that Kim Ki-duk’s “Breath” will be screened as well. But it seems to me that Cannes has become something of an exclusive club, where the same members gain admittance year after year. And I can’t summon up any enthousiasm for the recent output of Catherine Breillat, Fatih Akin, the Coens, Emir Kusturica, Alexander Sokurov, or Gus Van Sant. On the other hand, fans of Rodriguez/Tarantino will be disappointed that “Grindhouse” will not be shown in its entirety, as it was intended to be seen. Shame.

    Oh, and Assayas’ world-hopping genre film BOARDING GATE looks like a winner in the Midnight section.

    Why is Kim Ki-duk’s Breath missing from the in competition list? It’s in the pdf and known to be there…
