Rogue Pictures Presents THE UNBORN Now Playing

The Cannes Film Festival, one of the more prestigious and well known festivals in the world, announced its lineup today. The festival will take place the latter half of May.
Films in competition this year include works from Canadians Atom Egoyan and David Cronenberg. Other standouts include Lars Von Trier, Gus Van Sant, Robert Rodriguez and Johnny To [Johnny makes it noteworthy on the What the Hell? scale].
And the films out of competition are not so shabby, including Revenge of the Sith, A Bittersweet Life, and The Bow.
Emir Kusturica will be this years President of the Jury, practicing a little more restraint that the excitable Tarantino.

I quite liked PTU, but To is not exactly a top-bar filmmaker.

It looks like the Cannes announcement isn’t entirely complete ... someone posted on the KineJapan list that the new Shinji Aoyama film will also be there ... we may still be getting some stragglers as the festival gets closer ...
As for To, I like some of his stuff but I tend to leave his films feeling disappointed ... he’s enormously gifted with technical stuff - the opening sequence in Breaking News is one of the best things I’ve seen in ages - but he just never seems to bother writing characters. I’m sure he’s got a masterpiece lurking in him somewhere but I don’t think he’s made it yet ... early word on Election is REALLY good, though, so here’s joping ... it’s got a wicked cast ...

Grady over at Kaiju Shakedown has got his take on the Asian stuff at Cannes here. He knows his stuff, so it’s worth a look ... once I finish wading through my post-Philly backlog of stuff I’ll start digging through the lineup to see what I can turn up in terms of trailers ...
