   Heh, just mailed this tip to Twitch a second before this was posted.

   Not much asian cinema this year. None in competition and none from S-korea or Japan.

   Oh well, I’m rooting for Kaurismäki.

   Yes, pretty light on the asian stuff this year, however, funny thought, their poster looks a lot like a Christopher Doyle/wkw image, doesn’t it?

   A far much better line-up than last year’s.  I have a feeling Babel will do very well.  International cast, international locations and directed by Inarritu.

   I cannot wait for the backlash against SOUTHLAND TALES. It’ll be funny as hell.

   Why the hell is Linklater’s FAST FOOD NATION in competition and not the far more artistic looking SCANNER DARKLY?

   And while I’m very psyched for PAN’S LABYRINTH ... C’mon, a horror film? In competition? Who are they kidding?!

   Del Toro’s Spanish ‘horror films’ end up being more gothic Dramas with some tangential horror elements….The Devil’s Backbone being the prime example, but also Chronos.

   Someone over at Daily Greencine also pointed out the absence of David Lynch’s new film INLAND EMPIRE.  Hmmmm.

    Kurt. That’s probably because the poster IS from In the mood for love.
    Can’t remember if it is an actual shot from the film or just a promotional poster but that’s definetly from there.. just a little homage to WKW since he’s heading up the jury this year.
    Great poster regardless, wouldn’t mind to have it on my wall.

    Election 2 premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and will receive its HK commercial release next week. Cannes generally shies away from putting already-released films in the main competition—it’s not unheard of, but it’s something they don’t like to do if they can avoid it. I doubt it has much to do with the film’s quality (which is right up there with the original’s from every account I’ve seen).

    The lack of Asian cinema is a little puzzling—Kore-eda’s Hana was supposedly a lock, but it’s nowhere to be seen in or out of competition. Jia Zhangke’s Still Life is conspicuously absent. I believe Kim Ki-duk’s Time was supposed to be done in time for the festival, too. On the plus side, there does seem to be some interesting Asian fare in the Certain Regard section.

    One final note: Jeffrey Wells is reporting (via an unnamed source) that The Fountain is a no-show because Aronofsky demanded a competition slot or nothing and the selection committee called his bluff. That said, it’s surprising the committee apparently didn’t consider it worthy of a competition slot in the first place.

    Jia Zhangke’s “Still Life” isn’t finished yet, so it can’t go to Cannes.

    But “Oldboy”, “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, “Sin City” were still in the main competition at Cannes.  (“Love Will Tear Us Apart” even had its world premiere at HKIFF)

    Southland Tales’ premise (Philip K. Dick meets Andy Warhol) certainly sounds interesting. And the cast names are a hoot (Bai Ling is in it?! Hehehe). But I have yet to see Donnie Darko. So right now, I’ll just think of Richard Kelly as a very hot-looking director who is hyped beyond means by my “DD is teh best movie evah!” peers.

    Personally I can’t wait to see what that nutter Aki Kaurisamaki has coming out.  He’s a gem of a filmmaker.

    Quick question:  Is this the FINAL Cannes line-up or is there more to come?

    The missing Asian films (Jia Zhangke, Hirokazu Koreeda, etc) will hopefully turn up in the Venice fest…

    Is it just me or does the Cannes competition lineup look a little… dull. I don’t know many of the filmmakers in competition, and those I do know don’t exactly light a fire ‘neath me arse.

    I think FAST FOOD NATION made the cut instead of SCANNER DARKLY because SCANNER had it’s premiere at the SXSW Fest earlier. As someone mentioned, they like to snatch world premieres.

    Can’t wait for Paulo Sorrentinos “L’Amico De Famiglia”. His “Consequences of Love” was by far the best film I viewed in 2005. Simply stunning!
