Canadian Arctic Thriller:  THE THAW Trailer

Updated with a finalized version of the trailer to prevent the director from slitting his wrists.

From the Vancouver production house that brought the very funny and gorgeously produced period-zom-com Fido comes this more straight-up horror/thriller.  The Thaw follows the initial discovery of a woolly mammoth up in the arctic (uncovered by the effects of climate change—hmmm, see also Larry Fessenden‘s fabulous The Last Winter) but (the trailer suggests) quickly turns into a riff on Alien or The Thing (I am willing to bet that director Mark Lewis is a big John Carpenter fan)  as body hopping parasites begin to infect those investigating the discovery.  You will find the first trailer after the jump. While it does not impress to the degree of Fido (or even Slither), looky here:  Val Kilmer is in it in a supporting role.  The world needs more Kilmer.  Seriously.

Canadian genre films ahoy!  2009 appears to be shaping up to be a banner year with Pontypool, Splice, The Thaw, and rock ‘n roll vampire comedy, Suck, all on the way.

    Aw deleted!

I don’t know if it’s kosher to post links to other movie sites here, but Trailer Addict’s got it in pretty high res. It does have a bit of that Last Winter feel to it, and the Thing comparison is apt.

While we’re on the topic of The Last Winter, did anyone else think that…

    **SPOILERS**

...the last scene pretty much ruined the movie? I loved almost everything about it, but the “monster” being some sort of gigantic ghost moose creature was as silly as it gets. It would have been way creepier to not show anything and save the money in the process. Not that the CG was bad, you just can’t make a creature like that look intimidating.

Thanks Metro, embed fixed until someone more technical around these parts uploads it into the Twitch Player….not that that is a hint or anything…

You know, that looks pretty good.

I don’t have a huge problem with the final shot in TLW, but it wasn’t really necessary.  The film is very good without any CGI, and putting it in at the end doesn’t really help it, but it doesn’t hurt it too much either.  I really do love The Last Winter, and with Wendy & Lucy, Glass Eye Pix is on my radar for their less genre-y productions.  (Not a huge fan of I Sell the Dead, even if it passes the time somewhat…)

Ooh, this sounds fun.  Good find, Kurt.  Anxious to see it.  And I agree - more Kilmer is generally a good thing.

Definitely looks interesting - the bleak setting really sets the mood.

    Impressive!

It’s been awhile since GINGER SNAPS and seeing other countries do very well working in genre films, like SHAUN OF THE DEAD,THE DESCENT,BLACK SHEEP, REC, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and THE HOST it’s great to see Canada step up and start turning out films that look like they can stand along side those ones.

Hope it’s as good as the trailer implies.

I watched The Last Winter a little while ago and I have to say I really liked it. But I agree with Metrogenic that the end part was pretty much unnecessary. If they had saved money on the CGI maybe they would have had something to spend on the very last shot of the film. At least to me that one had the vibe of “we really can’t afford this shot but let’s try it anyway” and it turned out to be mostly confusing.

Anyway, TLW was an excellent reminder that there are far too few horror films set int he arctic. At least to me there are very few things scarier than being surrounded by snow with no way out - but maybe that has something to do with being Finnish and actually having been there smile

For the nordic setting alone I welcome The Thaw. Though I’m still traumatized about alien parasites from wathing The Thing as a kid…
