For those not particularly in tune with the unnecessary pop culture workings in the UK, the B-List celebrety alcohol-consumers and the increasingly small or selective gene pool they breed from, when Billie Piper and Chris Evans (ex-hubby, a ginger much older than her with oodles of cash) began to go their separate ways, Billie was known as a teen pop sensation.

“I want to train as an actor” was what see seemed to say, and we all kind of thought, “Yeh, right. Dream on lady”. Well, she trained and she did a couple of poor films, some of which have come out of the woodwork post-Who, and then landed a role in Dr.Who. Normally it’s the death knell for any career, you’ll be remembered as Rose Tyler until your dying days, but this time the Doctor is a different beast and memories much shorter, people more accomodating and prone to hiring with a little more imagination.

Now Billie is quiting and bows out at the end of Series Two - with a bang, apparently - and Tennant seems to be going on. Normally the focus is on the Doctor himself, but it’s sink or swim time now for Billie. She could find that it’s a matter of being good at that role and not so good at others : Soap Opera actors / actresses find they either flourish or fail upon leaving the show that made them.

Anyway, the point is to say she’s going, and I watch with interest to see how she copes with it all once it has happened. Series Two hasn’t quite gone down so well, the episodes are mixed and there’s some hefty mis-casting in there too. Could be ideal timing. [Source : BBC Entertainment].

I’m betting that while Billie may leave, Rose will remain. Something like Romana. The seeds for this were laid in ‘The Parting of the Ways’, I think.

Too bad, she’s one of the reasons I liked the new incarnation, really cute and did a decent job.

Yeah, I was amazed Billie could pull it off, but i think her character was one of the strongest things about the new Who.

Doesnt necessarily mean the death knell to her career youth - remember Leela went on to appear in Eastenders!

I was blown away by her performance in the new show. Not being familiar with her before it, I thought ‘okay, here’s the pop singer eye candy they hired to get over with the younger set’ but she was absolutely fantastic - when the role called for her to be miserable you really felt it, when she was having a good time she really looked like being on the show was a gas. I’ll miss her.

I’m sad about this, but not entirely surprised .. the way they’ve been building the relationship between Rose and the Doctor this year they’re going to come to a crisis point soon. They’re either going to have to get them together romantically or bust them up and romance doesn’t really fly with Who ...

It’s true that some of the episodes this season have been slightly below the highs of the first, but when it’s good it’s really good. The last double parter Impossible Planet/Satan Pit was one of the best things I’ve seen on TV for a very long time.

The loss of Billie is a little worrying, though. She provided the emotional core of the show, always lending a necessary human element to the (often hardcore) sci-fi themes it sketches. I dearly hope the writers can somehow compensate for her loss.

the episodes are mixed and there’s some hefty mis-casting

In other words, the new series is exactly like the original series…
