A fairly predictable and mundane year for the awards, save a few choice moments (fewer than usual) and some “about time” recognition for some shows and stars. “Peep Show” got something, post-reprieve and pre Series Four. Harry Hill won for his “TV Burp” which has had quite a few series, and he himself has been around since the early 90’s. Gervais didn’t win, Merchant did. Charlotte Church?! Russell Brand?! ‘Little Britain’ *snooze* - good, but it’s too familiar and feels tired now, far too obviously a cash cow by now.

Madonna turned up, so did Jack Black, so did a 20+ snake that tried to escape into the crowd. Not many awards for the more risque or political comedies, no sign of Coogan, but a nice appearance from Peter Baynham as one of Sacha Baron Cohen’s team of writers - many might remember Baynham from Armando Iannucci’s “Armistice” shows back in the 90’s - and it was nice to hear Cohen’s real voice (he avoids interviews and public appearances) as he announced, “...Sorry Borat couldn’t be here, he’s the Guest of Honor at the Holocaust Denial Conference in Israel…”.

Still, predictable it may be, the one that caught me out was the award to ‘Star Stories’, one of the few things getting any kind of positive attention for Channel 4 right now, and not something I’ve watched more than a few trailers for - I can’t get “I’m Mick Hucknall!!!!” out of my head, and if you’ve seen it, you’ll know why. Oh, and for those interested in these shows, to save me time I’ll just point to the search engine (up there! top of the page!) and say that YouTube is your friend for tasters these days, of course. You’ll find ‘Star Stories’ is out there on R2 UK DVD (was the last time I looked - there’s an official site for it too) and ‘Peep Show’ has a Box Set for Series 1-3 out now, Jimmy Carr has a live R2 UK DVD Box Set Collection out now, the live ‘Little Britain’ is out too, ‘Catherine Tate’ has a Series 1+2 Set out there, and everything else is kind of part of the flow of daily TV so won’t be appearing anywhere, most likely.

Star Stories was god awfull, but the majority of the “Best New TV Comedy” nominations were. Good to see Stephen Merchant deservedly win Best TV Comedy Actor, the speech for it was probably the highlight of the night, Gervais being condisending via Sattelite was absolutely priceless, and it was good to see Ross was as ruthless as usual. Hopefully 2007 will be a better year for new british comedy.

Big fab of Carr, Way for Wallace and Gromit, Harry Hill, Charlotte Church, Russell Brand and Catherine Tate I’m really not that sure about. I guess my comedy tastes aren’t with the populous.

Wasn’t there a best radio comedy category in previous years. Granted it was always the same nominees but to miss it out completely seems wrong especially as more and more comedians have their own radio show now.

Oh also, Catherine Tate is dire, how much longer can she get away with ripping off other comedians (mainly that of Little Britain)?

richard, i wouldn’t call myself a huge fan of jimmy carr, he has certainly rescued himself from the pit of a million ‘top 100’ shows, and i’m firmly in the camp that can’t deny a joke is funny whoever tells it - he tells some damn smart jokes, but he’s not particularly insightful or political, so he gets shunned by the comedy trendies, i suppose. as for other catagories (such as radio) i think there’s plenty of room for other stuff in here - radio is a massive area of comedy, but a lot of potential listeners (myself included) don’t really follow radio because it’s a generational thing with us young types to stick to TV (maybe…) rather than sift through a series of broadcasts that are seemingly naff on initial looks (radio 1 - what a travesty!) and so on… thing is, every year’s a good year for british comedy, but i think lots of it goes unnoticed by the british comedy awards - i’ve seen plenty i really liked this year, and yet the show / awards seem to stick to familiar, safe, popular ground all too often, instead of pointing out other worthy stuff that’s out there : hey, i’ve mentioned some great, some not so great, new and existing shows this year that didn’t even get nominated.

It should read: “Holocaust Denial Conference in Iran...”, or maybe it was Tehran? Anyway, I’m sure it wasn’t Israel.

ben - you’re right of course, it wasn’t israel, but i wrote this off the top of my head and at pace the morning after, and at that point there wasn’t much easy-to-find coverage of the awards other than the headline of merchant winning his particular award…. let alone quotes from the event. still, to save going back, at least the error is mentioned here (well spotted!) and sorry if it confused or upset anyone reading it.
