The inaugural edition of Brazilian genre film festival RIOFAN launched yesterday and this is a notable event for a number of reasons. The programming team has put together a stellar lineup of films - 180 in all - including a competitive section that features Twitch faves Timecrimes, La Vida Me Mata, Mirage Man and Jack Brooks Monster Slayer. And then there are the retrospectives, one of which is dedicated to Coffin Joe and features one of the first ever public screenings of the icon’s “lost” film A Praga, which was just recently re-discovered and restored. Very nice. Read on for the full press release.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: RIOFAN starts today!
The Festival opens today, April 30, with the Brazilian premiere of George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead. RIOFAN will screen more than 180 films, including short and feature-lenght movies.
Nine titles will compete in the International Jury Competition, while six are featured in Visions – a competitive section for films with an experimental, inovative approach to the fantastic. All films featured in Panorama and the Midnight Screenings will compete for the audience award for best film.
A retrospective of Brazilian horror and fantasy shorts, the RIOFAN Classics section, and a special showcase of H. P. Lovecraft inspired films are also highlights of the event.
The awards will be announced in May, 8th. That night, José Mojica Marins will receive his award for career achievement and will host a special screening of A Praga (The Plague), considered lost for several years. Mojica will also present an exclusive preview of Encarnação do Demônio (Embodiment of Evil), the last entry on his Coffin Joe trilogy, which is due to open in August in Brazil.
