French filmmaker Olivier Assayas does not get a lot of exposure over on this side of the Atlantic, even though he has made more than one film in English and often uses actresses outside of France.  Perhaps the most famous example of this is when he cast his then wife Maggie Cheung to play herself in a film about remaking the silent French vampire serial Irma Vep.  He would use Cheung again (now ex-wife) as a jet-setting would-be singer, but more of a junkie, along with Nick Nolte and Don McKellar in Clean which hops from Hamilton (Canada) to London to Paris.  Alienation in the illusion of a global village seems to be the sandbox he likes to play in lately.  The widely panned, but nevertheless quite compelling DemonLover focused on a pan global corporate effort to fuse anime and snuff cinema into the web medium.  Oh, and he really likes Sonic Youth.

His current film, Boarding Gate, stars Michael Madsen, Asia Argento and Kelly Lin.  It premiered at this years Cannes (as a Midnight Movie) to more or less indifferent silence.  The trailer features a fair bit of sex ‘n guns in a languid fashion.  It is Safe For Work, but *barely*.

“An Italian woman who lives in London, has a passionate affair with a former financial big gun. She also had a second lover, a contract killer who has to kill the big gun. Her second lover’s wife is behind the scenes, pulling the strings.”

I like both Madsen and Argento but other than the sexy bits, the rest of the trailer isn’t particularly interesting to me. Still, I’d see it if given the chance.

i kinda liked clean even if it was a bit unambitious, but i’m always a sucker for anything with maggie cheung in it.
this one actually seems a bit more exciting. i might give this a try.
