Big Budget Russian Horror VIY Pushed Back To 2009!

Quick question:  has the big budget remake of Russian horror picture Viy been getting progressively larger and more complicated as interest rises throughout the production or is it just that the producers have bitten off way more than they can chew?  We first wrote about this film all the way back in November of 2005 - at which point a 2006 release was planned - and here we are in late 2007 with no release in sight.  In fact the good folks over at 24fps have spotted a Russian news report saying that the film is now targeting a February 2009 release citing complicated animal and effects shots still to be filmed.

Part of me hears this news and thinks, damn this is going to turn out to be a mess.
Another part of me hears this and thinks, damn between this and Bondarchuk’s Inhabited Island there’s going to be some sweet stuff coming out of Russia over the next eighteen months.
A third part of me hears this and thinks, DAMN!  The flying vines didn’t count as complicated effects shots?

    They are planning to release it on 200th birthday of Gogol. And they made additional scenes.

    I participated in a Q&A;sessions with Robert Englund at the FACTS convention in Ghent, Beglium yesterday. He told us that he is preparing to direct his own version of the Gogol story. Perhpas we will see two Viy-movies released simultaniously, then…

    Very strange-I thought the film VEDMEA was this VIY remake-obviously just a variation of it(VIY). I had wondered what happened to the vines.

    I still think it’s going to be difficult to top the original.
    Forget about special effects and demons, just being stuck in that community with the mayor’s daughter trying to kill you is scary enough!!
