Ray Winstone is looking mighty trim in one of two stills released (via the LA Times) from Robert Zemekis’ Mo-Cap version of Beowulf penned by Roger Avery and Neil Gaiman.  Apparently this is PG-13 version of the epic poem has toned down a fair bit of the sex and violent imagery and Gaiman and company are pushing for a ‘more hardcore’ version of the DVD.  Photo-realistic animation seems to be the order of the day and things look very, very good.  Expect more details to drop regarding the project at the upcoming ComicCon.

A larger version of the still on the left (as well as one other) can be found at ShockTillYouDrop.

**UPDATED** Now the Trailer in Various formats has been put up on Apple.com.  Unlike the photorealism the stills suggest, it looks a surreal mix of cartoon-ish, videogame-ish and real-ish.

According to IMDb Aaron Stephens is the physique for Beowulf so Ray might not get all the credit, but that aside I have to say the project looks pretty spiffy.

Although judging from the LA Times article things do seem unclear on the unrated/NC-17 cut that was rumored months ago (rumored for IMAX if I recall correctly as well a DVD release).

Still, even with the lack of swearing and well place set pieces for the benefit of the MPAA it sounds like an enjoyable fantasy romp. Ratings are always a compromise but it sounds like this one at least is attempting as much as possible to stay true to the script while remaining financially viable.

Oh and I’ll add that ET is apparently having a preview of the flick tonight and a kind soul on the IMDb boards found a little tease within the following preview video for tonights show. (apologies for comment spam, but the new twitch seems to have lost the ability to edit comments?)

It’s at the end of the clip so you will have to endure a fair bit of pop nonsense.

So wait - they’re just using Winstone’s head and voice but not his body - and they’re using this other guy’s body but not his head and voice?  Holy crap.  That’s insane.

I’d be shocked if an NC-17 version of an Bob Zemekis-related film ever came to fruition, let alone a cut designed to screen solely on IMAX screens.  Don’t get me wrong, that sounds awesome - just a little too far-out.

Yea.  I was being a tad facetious about Winstone’s bod.  I mean the guy is over 50!

Feel the same way on the trailer - a bit of a mash of good and bad. Of course this pretty much teaser footage so things may improve with another trip through the render farm (or not), the closeups are incredibly well done if nothing else but the wideshots look somewhat sketchy in spots and the footage of Grendel was rather disappointing.

Overall looks highly interesting and I’m just hoping things overall will be tweaked up to the level of the Beowulf/Grendel’s Mother sequence. They’ve got three months still to work on it afterall.

That motion capture stuff seems to have come real long way in terms of really being photorealistic. There were shots in this teaser that didn’t look different than footage from Zack Snyder’s 300. Then there were others that looks distractingly like a videogame cut sequence. We’ll see how it ends up and by “we’ll see” I mean I’ll be there opening day. Unless they decide to delay this a couple months for Europe as usual, in which case I may just wait for the DVD release and hope for the fabled NC-17/Unrated version.

I think the “videogame cut sequence"-look comes from all those impossible camera moves, they’d scream CGI even if they had been shot for real. When overused these shots are irritating as hell.

But in general tis looks very impressive. Unbelievable, the amount of effort people are willingn to go through, just to have Angelina Jolie’s tattoos removed!
