One of the troubles with playing catch-up on all the British Comedy stuff I’ve seen and loved over the years is that I’ve sifted out much, focussed on new upcoming shows, and it all looks a little too much like everything’s worthy of an A+.

Well, back in 2004, just before Twitch started, when ‘Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace’ aired, ‘Kingdom Hospital’ was on and it seemed ironically to be parodied in such a timely fashion, and the show itself was little-advertised and hidden away. It’s also an unusual show, breaks with a lot of typical comedy show elements and has its’ own way of going about things, yet it’s clearly got student appeal for it’s intentional naffness. Yes, it’s a pulp sci-fi parody, made to look as though lost in the vaults and rediscovered. I absolutely loved it, hit and miss though it certainly is, refreshing, well-observed and just nicely different.

Unfortunately the show has taken quite some time to make it to DVD, and has suffered a delay from the intial date of July 2006 which looked likely to be because of a belated USA license for broadcast. In truth, the follow-up series, ‘Man to Man with Dean Learner’ (Marenghi character Learner, played by Aoyade, giving interviews with old friends, all played by Holness apparently) was filmed just before the Summer of 2006 and is now due to air from October 13th 2006 on Channel 4 here in the U.K (originally slated to appear later in the Summer of 2006) - a few days before the new release date of the DVD. Richard Aoyade and Mathew Holness then began to appear elsewhere - both feature in Iannucci’s ‘Time Trumpet’ series which was likely filmed some time ago- and they’ve clearly put a lot of work into the extras for the ‘Garth Marenghi’ DVD too; specifications say there’s a commentary on each episode, about an hours worth of special features, plus English Subtitles.

I will be tuning in for the new series, and although I’ve already seen ‘Darkplace’ a few times I am tempted by the rare substantial work that’s gone into making it an experience worth having yet again, in a slightly different fashion.

Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace’ delayed October 18th R2 UK DVD at Amazon.co.uk [Driect Link].

I watched the entire run of DARKPLACE when it ran on the Sci-fi channel in the US a few months ago and I thought the series as a whole was pretty hit and miss. I’m kinda glad it only ran for 6 episodes because my enthusiasm for it was really waning by the last couple of shows.

I used to work at a film location, ‘supervising’ crews and so on, and one of my favourite memories is of a really nice, long chat with Garth Marenghi himself. They were filming “Man to Man With David Learner”, and in between shots I decided to take the plunge and talk, since I liked his work and I knew that he - like myself - would be a fan of good bad films, so to speak. So we shared recommedations of classic bad films that really should be seen. I asked him if he would make another series of “Dark Places” and he told me that Channel4 hadn’t liked “Dark Places”.

We had a great long talk, as if we had been friends for some time, as he was such a disarming guy and probably the least affected actor I had ever met on a film unit. It was a very memorable, funny and enjoyable conversation and I came away very grateful for it, and with great respect for him. ...I look forward to getting the series.

The First episode of Man to Man with Dean Learner aired in the UK last night. It was truly great! (but then as a big fan of Darkplace, i probably would say that)

Admittedly, the chat - with good ol’ Garth Marenghi himself as the first guest - sagged in a couple of places, but the vingettes: an advert for Garth Marenghi’s complete works (“if you only ever buy one Garth Marenghi book, buy this one ‘cause its all of them”) and a preview clip of his up and coming film where cosmic wasps invade london, were truly fantastic.

Wheeling out Marenghi himself as the first guest was probably a wise move considering the Darkplace dvd launch. It slid existing fans comfortably into the new format, tho i am very much looking forward to seeing some of the bizarre characters Mat Holness will conjour up as Learners ‘remaining’ friends and ascociates!

While we’re on the subject of Darkplace-related comedy, anyone who enjoyed it should check out ‘Snuffbox’ by Matt Berry (the actor Todd Rivers) and American comedian Rich Fulcher. It has a pleasing taste for the surreal, a wicked sense of humour and fabulous songs, yet currently it languishes in relative obscurity locked away on BBC3. Help it get the wider release it deserves!

don’t get me started on snuff box or i’ll get banned again

re dean learner, his guests are the stars or star, a consistently funny and inventive performance by matt holmes, i have only seen eps 1 and 3 and 4 all were hilarious. he is a very talented and funny man, this however shows up mr learner to be less of a comic reation only shinning in his tour de crass classic under acting in war of the wasps.

    SCARE ME SEXY google
