In certain corners of the film world, such as the one I inhabit, Joe Dante is properly revered as one of the most talented directors of the past 30 years. Thus, the news that he has signed on to make an indie horror film has me jumping out of my skin. According to Variety, Dante will begin shooting Bat Out of Hell later this year. And to answer your first question, no, it’s not based on the Meat Loaf song.

The plot “centers on a red-eye flight from L.A. to New York during which hijackers confront the monstrous cargo.” The script is by Drew McWeeney (AKA Moriarty of Ain’t It Cool News) and Scott Swan, who also collaborated on two episodes of the TV anthology show Masters of Horror. One episode (Cigarette Burns) was pretty decent, but the other (Pro Life) was an unholy mess; I’m truly hoping that Bat Out of Hell is something special.

Back to Dante. From his early, fun exploitation flicks (Piranha) to his family-friendly Hollywood pictures (Gremlins, Innerspace, Small Soldiers) to his extensive work in TV (Police Squad!, Masters of Horror), I’ve always enjoyed his inventive, multi-layered storytelling and his playful love for twisting genre expectations. He has a deep and abiding appreciation of horror—The Howling and Homecoming are among my all-time faves—and makes the most of a limited budget. Hopefully, though, Dante’s re-make of Australian thriller Thirst, which was announced last month, will proceed later.
