Stick it in Google, and you’ll find nothing it seems. Except Pathfinders site. It’s a strange one this, a 53 minute documentary said to contain rare footage of at least one rarely seen short film, interviews and unspecified or changeable bits ‘n’ pieces. Oddly, in recent years, given how people hang their hopes so openly on non-film aspects of DVD presentations, and given how cursory they frequently are, I’ve actually thought there’s a missed opportunity to be explored. Create a series of releases that actually intends to provide the same kind of attention you find in extras, in booklets, within audio commentaries, and provide a visual production that actually has focus because it’s not quite so attatched or secondary to a film and it’s DVD presentation. Nice idea, difficult field - copyright, finance - but here’s at least one stand-out moment for Tsukamoto fans, potentially.

Undergoing a mini-renaissance in recent times, some films making belated subbed appearances and a general shift in the understanding of his body of work, broader philosophies as a result, Tsukamoto is a filmmaker of interest for his views on life. Back in the late 80’s was ‘Tetsuo‘ mania because of it’s vague connections to all that upcoming technological aspects in daily lives. Many never quite stepped beyond those perceptions of the man, Tom Mes’s book is essential and goes the furthest into exploring the various aspects effectively - a great actor, a visionary director, a man of interesting ideas and clear identity - whom still remains worthy of further popularity. How far this short film will go is anyone’s guess… I point it out as something of potential interest to those already keen more than I point it out as a certainty in terms of inherant value for a wider audience. Looks like the Pathfinder site will host a trailer for it at some point. For now, anyone know more about it?

Might be worth a look but the promise of just a few excerpted scenes from his early short films won’t convince me. THE ADVENTURES OF ELECTRIC ROB BOY is already available on an English subtitled DVD via Italy’s RaroVideo and there were a couple random minutes of PHANTOM OF REGULAR SIZE included as an extra on the German DVD of TETSUO. Now if someone would be able to dig the complete version of that up and release it on disc, that would be something to get excited about.

it’s still that eternal quandry though : companies releases seem to want to forcibly will people interested in foreign films that there’s not access to them in foreign places, that there’s not an overlap of availability that’s of use, sometimes causes confusion, and alters the dynamic of how things work in terms of their value.

It’s interesting for historical reasons, but other than that, Phantoms of Regular is really nothing more than an early, less accomplished color version of Tetsuo. Worth seeing, but not something to be terribly excited about.
