Oh, to be wealthy and free to travel anywhere at will ...

I’ve just been sent a pointer to the Barcelona Asian Film Festival website and the program is just spectacular.  Along with the mix of great films I’ve managed to catch elsewhere (Three Times, It’s Only Talk, University of Laughs, Princess Raccoon, Ranpo Jigoku, etc, etc) there are a batch of much acclaimed films that haven’t come anywhere near here yet (Bashing, Invisible Waves, Midnight My Love, Divergence, Eli Eli Lema Sabachthani, etc etc) PLUS some fantastic and fantastically rare titles.  Such as?

Ryuichi Hiroki’s Girlfriend Someone Please Stop the World
Shinji Aoyama’s Like A Desperado Under the Eaves
Bong Jun-Ho’s Influenza
Sogo Ishii’s Mirrored Mind

I could go on, but I’ll stop for the good of my own sanity.  The full program is here.

Wow, awesome program… I definitely recommend YAWARAKAI SEIKATSU (It’s Only Talk), WARAI NO DAIGAKU (University of Laughs), BEI YA ZI DE NAN HAI (Taking Father Home) and YEOJA, JEONG-HYE (This Charming Girl).

Hey, there’s nothing Filipino.  Shame on you, old colonizer, you.

One cute little gem to look for is Moon and Cherry (Tsuki to Cherry) - sort of a Sassy Girl with sex as a female university student interested in erotic writing finds a virgin and “uses” him to help her writing. Quite funny and sweet.

I like Girlfriend Please Stop the World a fair amount - but it was too slow and underplayed for a few friends of mine.

The film I would really love to see the most is Nayakan - I have never been able to find this on dvd but it was one of Mani Ratnam’s (Dil Se) first films and is suppose to be a great gangster film.

Hey! came here looking for some more information about “Girlfriend, someone please stop the world”. I went to see it the other day and I really enjoyed it.

I’m living in Barcelona and I have to say this is the best festival you can find in here. This year’s shorts aren’t as good as last year’s ones but anyway, I’ve been watching as many movies as possible and I have to say they are really good. I’ve even seen Ryuichi Hiroki and other directors!! :D

    Bye wink
