You could write a book on the ridiculous treatment Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Syndromes and Century has received in Thailand - where prints of the film were seized by the government who not only refused to let them be screened in that nation but refused to give them back so the film couldn’t be screened elsewhere either - treatment all the more bewildering because it’s a quiet, gentle, beautiful little film that its creator intended as an ode to his own parents.  There’s no attempt to court controversy in this one but in a country where the censorship board is controlled by police and politicians it’s obviously all about who you know and Weerasethakul obviously doesn’t know the right people.

Anyway.  The Thai people may be deprived of the latest work by one of their very best, but we aren’t.  It’s hitting DVD January 15th and is available to order now.
