Rogue Pictures Presents THE UNBORN Now Playing
Last night the annual Edda Awards, our version of the Golden Globes, were held here in Iceland in the midst of the biggest economic disaster we have ever faced. It didn’t come as much of a surprise that Baltasar Kormakur and his production company Blueeyes would rule the ceremony both in nominations and awards. Baltasar’s film White Night Wedding gathered 14 nominations for the hit dramedy and won seven of them, including Best Picture. Reykjavik Rotterdam, a film that Baltasar starred in and produced ended up with five awards, including Best Script and Best Director. Best Short went to Runar Runarsson’s 2 Birds, a film that has been raking up awards at festivals all over the world. Runar was nominated for an Oscar in 2006 for his short The Last Farm and the guy still hasn’t finished film school. I think it’s safe to say that people should be on the look out for this guy when he makes his first feature.
This has been a good year for Icelandic film, with record number of premieres and attendance has been up which is promising and next year there are reported 8 films slated to be released. How the current economic situation will affect those films remains to be seen. Probably some more than others.

One of two great wedding films of 2008. A fine double bill with Rachel Getting Married. Nice to see Kormakur getting so much love, and hopefully this will get to North America (outside of festivals) soon!
Did you do the One Sheet for WNW Swarez?
Swarez 11/17/2008 @ 6:31am
This one yes, not the domestic release.

Nice.

Swarez, any love for the “other Icelandic wedding film”, Country Wedding? I enjoyed it very much at TIFF and had an interesting conversation with director Valdis Oskarsdottir at the Reykjavik International Film Festival this year. It would just be bad luck for her to be shut out by Baltasar.

By the way, totally agree about Runar Runarsson. 2 Birds was fantastic.

White Night Wedding is the better film, but Country Wedding is a real hoot if you are down for some dark comedy. There is some bleak and ugly yet still over-the-top hilarity in that one.

Country Wedding got four nominations but didn’t win any. The nominations were for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing and Best Music.
Baltasar has pretty much ruled this event if he has a film in the running. No matter how good or bad it is. It always feels like the more popular film gets the awards instead of the “better” film.
For instance Valdís should have won for Best Editing cause she was shooting the film with 6 cameras at all time while Reykjavík Rotterdam, which won wasn’t noticeably well edited. It all comes down to how many people in the “Academy” saw these films. Everyone went to see RR while Country Wedding got minimal attendance.
The rules for this awards show change from year to year and some of the categories are strange indeed.
