Rogue Pictures Presents THE UNBORN Now Playing

Michel Ocelot’s gorgeous animated film was bought by the Weinstein Company in Berlin yesterday. This moves the film, which screened at Cannes 2006 (thus it has been finished for some time!), closer to seeing some sort of limited theatrical release in North America. Or what is more likely, a DVD. I’ve been looking forward to this for some time, and although TWC is not my first choice to acquire any piece of world cinema, I am glad someone picked this up.

When looking at the Weinstein’s lamentable track record with animated films (it makes their treatment of Asian films look commendable) I cannot help but feel that this is discouraging news indeed.

Slightly closer to France, in the UK, it’s been picked up and dubbed by Soda Pictures, and is getting a cinema release very soon – see http://www.theprincesquest.com
Judging from the trailer, the dub has been made with a completely British cast (and some rather grating pseudo-exotic accents for the Arab characters). It will be interesting to see whether the Weinsteins simply use this, or if we’re going to end up with two different English dubs.
