Mark this one down if you’re a Japanese film fan in the DC area.  The Freer and Sackler Galleries are hosting a retrospective series of the films of Japanese mega star Tadanobu Asano starting February first.  On the sched?  Vital, Last Life in the Universe, Bright Future and loads more. Tickets?  Free.  In attendance for the first two screenings?  Asano himself.  Asano’s so incredibly busy that he rarely makes appearances at festivals and screening events like this - he hasn’t made it to the Toronto International Film Festival for the past few years despite having multiple films play - so this is a very rare opportunity ...

why couldn’t i live closer to dc?  this sounds like a once in a lifetime chance.  last life in the universe, funky forest, the taste of tea and shark skin man and peach hip girl are some of my favorite films and mostly because of his performances.  he’s amazing!

this rocks!  I think I’ll show up for the Last Life screening even though I own the DVD as it’s on a Saturday afternoon and should be easier to get into.

You can’t get advance tix online; they just hand them out beginning an hour before each screening.  So the Friday night screening might be too crowded.

I feel stupid for never having seen Ichi all the way through but I did love his performances in Cafe Lumiere and Last Life and even Invisible Waves (which was not as great).

Great news - and thanks for the heads-up. I will definitely be there for Last Life...It will be wonderful to see it in a real theater. DVD is a great alternative, but nothing is better than the big screen - especially with Doyle’s cinematography.
