Another Midnighteye Update : Shinji Aoyama & Sabachtani, Criterions’ Swordplay DVDs Reviewed, Samura

There’s always a little more new stuff in any midnighteye.com update that I can’t quite get in the title of a post, but that’s the things that primarily caught my attention. Anyway, a little less predictable than the 1st of every month right now, no less worthwhile waiting for. This time, Shinji Aoyama is interviewed; a timely way to get an insight into the man and his work in view of some of his work appearing thanks to Artsmagic in America (An Obsession, Wild Life, EM : Embalming - all reviewed here too) and there’s a review of his Tadanobu Asano movie ‘Eli Eli Lema Sabachtani?’ too. There’s reviews of all the Criterion issued discs of some classic chambara movies (the ‘Rebel Samurai : 60’s Swordplay Classics’ boxset out this week), and a look at a couple of Samurai Movie Books… instead of pointing out specific parts, go take a look in general.

Midnighteye is still in the same old place…

I saw Eli Eli last saturday. I’m still totally excited about that movie. In my opinion one of Aoyama’s top 3 movies, and so far my 2005 favorite.

Can’t say the same for TAKESHIS’ and HAZE. While HAZE was ok, but nothing too original (very same atmosphere as MAREBITO), TAKESHIS’ totally sucked. Probably only Kitano himself understands these wacky dream-sequences. So far it’s Kitano’s most personal movie, because it only deals with his views and fears of the japanese show-biz. It starts out pretty funny, but soon turns into a totally confusing rollercoaster ride, which is totally annoying. Only thing I liked were the totally senseless shoot-outs.
