Thanks go to Rodney for alerting me and making my day in the progress...

According to German newspaper Zeit, a full version of Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 silent black and white picture “Metropolis” has been discovered in a film museum in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Damn, this is just about the coolest news imaginable. For the past 8 decades, almost a quarter of the movie has been considered lost, but the Buenos Aires version seems to contain the full movie as last seen in May 1927…
For me, this easily tops finding the lost spider-pit sequence from “King Kong” (although if I were Peter Jackson I’d have a quick chat with this museum...).

As screenshots show the film looks like it will give the restorers PLENTY of work, but the fact is that at least the footage is there to work with. I have full confidence that soon we will finally be able to see Fritz Lang’s full vision as he originally intended it.

And now, the hunt is on for who will release this as an Ultimate Edition on DVD and BluRay, containing all different versions and documentaries…

Go Kino!
Go Criterion!
Go Eureka: Masters of Cinema!

Your audience awaits you with bated breath!

Metropolis was one of the first movies i saw during my Film History classes at university. It’s very dear to my heart, tbh i didn’t know it had scenes missing, but i can’t wait to see the full vision of Lang on a big screen. One of the best movietheater experiences i’ve ever had was seeing a well restored print of the movie playing in the Amsterdam Tuschinski theater being accompanied a musician playing an organ.

I certainly hope Criterion or some other good distributor picks this up and gives it a good amount of extras i’m sure they’re millions of film theorist/historians who’d like to share their thoughts on this groundbreaking flick.

This is insanely exiting, I can’t wait to hear more.

The Weinstein Company is going to buy the rights and then cut it down to 90 minutes.  At least there would be some validity to their claims that they simply couldn’t find the original soundtracks this time.

No, seriously though, this is momentous news.  This actually brightened my ordinarily dour and unpleasant disposition when I heard it yesterday.

No, Luc Besson will buy the rights and add a hip hop soundtrack.

First you hit us with the Spaced news. And now this. This is an excellent film news day.

I would prefer Criterion instead of Kino for the R1 DVD, the first are a very hit and miss regarding the quality of their DVDs. But yes, can’t wait for seeing the full version.

Best news of the year! I hope they’re able to restore the footage to a watchable condition.

They could charge whatever they wanted for a release of this I would buy it. Sell my first born? Sure. That arm and leg I rarely use? Whatever you say man.
