We’ve just received word from the folks at Cinema Epoch that they plan on launching an as-yet untitled - or, at least, if they have titled it they haven’t told me the name - new series of Asian Arthouse DVDs and they have just acquired their first block of titles for the series. And if this is any indication of what is to come then we’re in for a major treat. First up is much acclaimed omnibus feature Ten Nights of Dreams - which features contributions from Yudai Yamaguchi, Kon Ichikawa, and Takashi Shimizu among others - with Shinji Aoyama’s Desert Moon, Royston Tan’s 4:30, Office Kitano production Ikinai and Lee Kwang-Mo’s Spring In My Hometown following close behind. Yes, please.

aoyama’s film dates back to 2000 / 2001, so wondering how well this went down back then and how well those artsmagic aoyama releases did? more excited, personally, to see ‘yume juya’ has a home in america. nice.

‘Desert Moon’ languished in distribution hell for quite a while before receiving a brief limited release and going to DVD. His “Crickets”, which played the 2006 Tokyo Int. Film Fest, is suffering a similar fate, as it hasn’t seen the light of day since.
Was “Ten Nights of Dremas” really “much acclaimed”? It seemed more like a typically patchy omnibus to me…

I have the unsubbed Japanese DVD of Ten Nights’ of Dreams, which was easier to follow since I have read the novel. It’s visually stunning, with lots of amazing effects work (CG and practical), and a fantastic batch of actors and directors involved. I will definitely double-dip on a subbed release.
