Seven Swords

Greece is not normally a place one associates with cutting edge film but there are signs that is beginning to change and Alexis Alexiou’s Tale 52 could very well be the film that leads the charge. Beautifully shot with what looks to be a perfectly cast leading man Alexiou’s film is the story of a man’s descent into a violent love and jealousy fueled madness.
After meeting at a dinner with friends, Iasonas and Penelope start a relationship. One day when Iasonas wakes up, Penelope has disappeared, but he is unable to reconstruct what has happened…. The disappearance of his recently conquered girlfriend drives rather shy Iasonas to despair and evokes confusing delusions in his already fragile mental makeup. A psychological thriller without redemption, with an outspoken visual language.

I just got chills…we have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the new Greek wave of cinema. I hope this is it and i have a feeling that its this! Lets pray it goes well comercially and critically! Greek cinema has a long history and has born many acclaimed directors and actors but it was stuck in the past . I hope more efforts like this take off, soon! Koreans did it why not the Greeks too!

Well, I saw the film in Rotterdam tiger competition a few days ago! Demanding, dark, moody, brain-twisting, definitely not conventional genre fare. I thought it was ultimately a refreshing and emotionally rewarding piece of cinema. Hope it gets wider distribution soon.
