Finally!  We’ve been tracking the progress of big budget Russian sci-fi picture Inhabited Island in these pages for a rather long time now but all that has been released to the public so far had been a handful of still images and three tantalizingly short teasers - each of which included only one real shot from the film.  But no more!  The first proper trailer has just released and while it is still on the short end it includes a good amount of footage to show off the incredibly expansive and detailed world of the film.

Why all the fuss?  Well, first of all because this is the new film from Fyodor Bondarchuk, the director of stellar war picture 9th Company and one of the absolute brightest lights in Russian commercial film.  Secondly, because this is based on a story by the Strugatsky Brothers who are best known on these shores for writing a little something that became Stalker, one of the greatest art-scifi pictures ever made.

You’ll find the new trailer and the three previous teasers below the break.

Wow - those really are “teasers”, aren’t they? Excellent visuals though, and interesting choice of “hero” - footballer’s perms making a comeback in sci-fi? Looking forward to learning more about this…

Damn that looks bad ass. When does this come out?

First volume comes out in Russia late this year, to be followed by part two sometime in 2009.  There will be a single volume international version as well.

Nice to see Leif Garrett is still getting work.

Seriously, this looks like it could go completely over-the-top in a good or bad direction.  With the Strugatsky Brothers’ contributing, I’m awarding benefit of the doubt honors at this time.
