I’m not sure why the comments are off on this article, especially if it’s going to be at the top of the page for most of the day, but I had to mention that as a New Yorker, no film captured the city post-9/11 better than Reign Over Me. The feeling of loss lingers far longer than anger or hatred, and often it confuses your foundation as a person. Director Mike Binder portrayed this so, so well that I was frankly surprised. I very much expected to have a high level of distaste for every film that dealt with 9/11. Even United 93, which technically is superb, felt just too crass at the end. I believe when it was released, many of us were still at the point where we didn’t want to hear about it. In fact, sometimes I wonder if we’re still ready to hear about it.
Dequinix, I was wondering why I got no comments, and it’s only just now that I read your post that I noticed I had accidentally switched the comments off!
(In my defense, that button is right next to the one labeled “keep this on top of the page”)
Thanks for your comment. I’ve been hearing good things about “Reign Over Me” and I should have at least mentioned it in my list.
The feeling of loss indeed hits me harder than anger. I’ve visited New York twice: once in 1998 and once to run the marathon in 2002 (quite possibly one of the most fantastic days in my life!). In 1998, I went to the top of the Empire State Building, walked from there to the WTC, but had no time left to visit the top.
In 2002 I visited ground zero. The vastness of the empty space and the visit to the miraculously undamaged chapel next to it (I giant tree shielded it from debris) astounded me. The very size of the tragedy is unfathomable, and seeing the mementos of all the people who disappeared that day, including children and rescue workers, is staggering.
Hope the new buildings will do the site justice. But that’s another discussion…
