THE MONSTER SQUAD - I sat down with the remastered disc (hadn’t seen the film since the theatrical release - oi!) for a bit of nostalgia.  The film is harmless fun (What was with the Suburbs and Monsters in the 1980s?  The ‘Burbs, Gremlins, The Lost Boys, The Monster Squad, Poltergeist, A Nightmare on Elm St., etc.)  Anyway, the first thing I noticed was just what a screenwriter (in this case Shane Black) could get away with in a kids film - kids smoking, little girls saying “shit” (Hell Drac calls the same little Drew Barrymore type a “Little Bitch” at one point! There are more gay jokes than you can shake a stick at (not a good thing, but surprisingly ubiquitous), The crossbow Murdering of Brides of Dracula and more than a little wanton murder (point blank shooting of Uncle Rico!).

While the film (not surprisingly) doesn’t hold up to the nostalgia or is particularly bright (or even makes much sense), got to give it credit for fucking with the target audiences headspace.  For that matter I love the way the production designers snuck in the Zombi2 and Return of the Living Dead Posters in the kids treehouse.

Stan Winston kicks ass in the creature designs and the Evil Dead II vortex is actually done better here than in EDII.

R1 stuff…

All About Lily Chou-Chou

I guess I was expecting a little too much from reading great reviews, but I was somewhat disappointed. Maybe it was the bad picture quality (thanks, Home Vision) or the Okinawa digicam trickstery that did it. The film still had me thinking about it the next day, so it must have been at least decent. wink 7/10

Linda Linda Linda

Feels like a generic teenage movie in the beginning, but picks up later. The songs in the end save the day. Interlaced but otherwise an acceptable transfer. 8/10

Raise the Red Lantern

Finally a good quality release. My first time seeing this masterpiece. Totally wowed. 10/10

Super Gals season 2

It’s 5 discs, so I haven’t had time to marathon this yet.

“Live Feed” - We shall see.

“Curtains” - heard good, heard bad…we shall see.

“Taxidermia” - Sex with dead pigs?  Vomit?  Taxidermi on yourself? Real Sex?  It can’t be all bad.

Just got:

Dragon Tiger Gate and Severance (couldn’t wait for the R1 release)
and season one of Deadwood
I hate how overpriced the HBO DVDs are. This one was on sale but it’s still ridiculously priced. I already have season three (I rented the first two seasons) but I wanted to own it for good and I’ve been meaning to go through the thing all over again.

Lots of fun that. A soild little horror film that mixes the comedy in well.

Regardless of the price, Deadwood Seasons 1-3 are worth every penny.  Definitely ranks as some of the best television ever made over the 60+ year history of the medium.  The cancellation was painful.  And now J. from Cincinnati is gone too.  Poor Milch.

As it stands I have about 40 odd discs to get through, so I’m feeling that my latest haul will be the last for some time.

Typhoon
After Life
Inland Empire
Django
The Scorpion

And one more. Open to suggestions? grin

the big heat

It’s nice to see that get a nice release.  I had it for years on a VHS I picked up while in Hong Kong and now and again the (as always rather dubious) subtitles used to drop off the bottom of the screen!
