I didn’t have time to watch the whole DARKMAN disc, but picked through some scenes; the picture is definitely soft and the color palate (which should really pop with Raimi at the helm) seems a little dull.  That being said, I looked at a few of the same scenes on my standard-def disc (equally bereft of features and non-anamorphic) and the difference was pretty surprising - the HD version marks quite an improvement.  Don’t know what the original audio mix was, though it definitely wasn’t 5.1 (which is the only english-language option here).  It ain’t a perfect release, but may well be the best we get for such a minor cinematic footnote.

Shimotsuma monogatari (R3 Korea)

I had been looking for this for a while. The price was steep, but at least it’s better than the VIZ version. Don’t know how it compares to the Japanese DVD though.

as far as i know, this HK disc is the only other subbed option outside the viz disc. this one suffers from a lack of subs for the road signs, which apparently would help, but doesn’t make too much difference overall…

Picked up 300.

Triflic was right.  Fun the first time, boring as hell the second.  I already gave it to a co-worker.

The lure of the steelbook had me pick up the Korean 300 release. My Dad has it now!

I snagged Irezumi today…confidence in Logboy’s review had me dive in when otherwise I might have held off for a while.

great film, and having seen a slice of the ‘kisses’ disc, i’m assuming both are simply based on the R2 J’s - with ‘kisses’ looking in better shape than irezumi, akai tenshi, and not quite as nice as ‘black test car’, so there’s also some slight source material issues at play, but not much.

HD DVD Hot Fuzz - fantastic muvie, stellar image, superb extras. Best $30 I ever spend on HD DVD combo.
I am really sorry for those who have BluRay players ( I have PS3) this formats war isn`t always good thing.
Ordered Lukas Moodysson Collection, for $30 it is hard to resist, I only seen Lylia Forever and it was amazing.

Moodysson’s best film is Fucking Amal (aka Show Me Love) - cracking film and far more accessible than his rather off-the-wall latest stuff.

I received The Show Must Go On and Hana last Friday.  My copy of The Show Must Go On was autographed by somebody, haven’t watched Hana yet since it is going to be part of AFFD and I’d rather experience it for the first time on the big screen.  I’m awaiting a whole bunch of DVDs for the first time in a while.

Some recent purchases:

“The Glove” / “Search and Destroy” - Dark Sky’s Drive-In double bill.

Superbly done!
Ads and trailers at the start and also between the two films. All nicely fitted on one, one sided disc with very good transfer quality….AND, above all, done with heart!

“Night of the Sorcerers”

2 for 1 BU Fulci collection:

“Conquest”
“Contraband” - upgrade from VHS.

“Taste the Blood of Dracula” - Upgrade fro0m my TV dupe for these underrated Drac entry with a stand-out turn by the late and rather great Ralph Bates.

“Cry Baby” - Director’s Edition.

“The Big Doll House”

“Blood and Black Lace” - VCI 2 disc.

Cheers for the heads up. I’m in the shallow end with Pinku really, just now getting around to investigating what’s on offer. I have a couple of Sato films on the shelf which I’m looking to get around to come the weekend so I’m set to plow along from here.
