personal stories and a few NSFW scans - hope nobody minds too much
The very first pre-recorded videotape I personally owned (but long since have lost) was a video2000 tape of Hundra. The first VCR my parents bought was that system. Good memories there and it’s one of those movies I just had to have on DVD. I don’t know what we rented in those days. Not much actually. I was allowed to rent a few videos only once a year during the summer holiday. I don’t know what kind of movies I went for then (not horror, I’m sure of that
) but I remember there always had to be a Bud Spencer movie in that summer bunch. For a long time tv had been my main source of movie viewing (the first tape I rented with my own money, another thing I remember well, was Hellraiser). Only at the end of the 90’s when my film addiction became serious and I started keeping score of everything I watched things started to change, rapidly!
In 1997 the score was 286 movies: 204 tv, 56 rented tapes, 15 cinema
In 1998 the score was 364 movies: 168 tv, 176 rented tapes, 20 cinema
In 1999 the score was 435 movies: 125 tv, 272 tapes, 38 cinema
In 2000 the score was 357 movies: 58 tv, 223 videos, 75 cinema
and so forth.
the last few years, since I started collecting DVD, I haven’t rented anything anymore. When tapes started to disappear from the videotheeks I did too
Actually I think I watch most of my movies in cinema now (more than 100 per year). 1999 was a top year for me, I saw one of my favorite films, Sombre, at my first ever visit to the IFFR (good start there!). I bought a DVD player and I bought my first bootleg tapes. I mean, 435 movies in one year is just crazy, I just finished my study and was still living at home at that time so I had oceans of time and money to spend
I was actually watching foreign films without subs at that stage (boots and from the amazing collection of the cultvideotheek in Amsterdam at that time: Story of Ricky, Viva La Muerte, L’Urlo). I also bought these two (obviously unsubbed) Japanese tapes:
Since DVD I stopped doing that, with a lot of obscure movies from around the world appearing with subs and in mint conditions it just became unnecessary.
Another movie I just got to have on DVD (but sadly isn’t released yet like Hundra or the Last Dragon, the Beastmaster etc.) is Black Fire http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0313286/
This is actually a movie I have seen on tv first, but I was very happy to find it on video a few years ago. Like Tiger Shark it’s one of those Rambo/Vietnam rip-offs, and this one also has got ninja’s! I think it’s one of the best in it’s genre.
a few more of this genre:
(this one didn’t scan too well because the cover is printed on the box instead of on an inlay)
I love the advertising on this box. It translates as: the main actress in this movie was the maitresse of president Marcos. His power prevented you from seeing this movie for years!
Love that werewolf box Dan, here is a favorite of mine (the movie, not the cover)
another great pulpy cover
and a few more kungfu movies from me. including two bruce le / bruce li movies
