last night I ‘raided’ a massive ex-rental tape storage
terborg.jpg
and came home with 115 new old tapes for my collection.
Too much to show, but here are a few nice / weird / interesting examples:

Japanese War

a Bud Spencer *look-a-like* western

There wasn’t much of the Sunrise label except this later generation
angelbeasts01_resize.jpg
angelbeasts02_resize.jpg

and this really special one!!
copblue01_resize.jpg
copblue02_resize.jpg
a special ‘Sunrise stock’ tape in VML colors and with VML logo… never seen anything like this before!

ofcourse other labels seem to have their own special stock made too:

it was more than bingo. It was a dream come true. It was many years of looking around on second hand markets worth of tapes on one big pile. Couldn’t sleep last night and am still excited about it! smile
There were at least 8000 tapes there and they have about 30.000 more in storage that I could also have access to, if I wish (and have the money smile) The owners seem to have bought complete tape inventories of many videotheken from the ‘videoland’ chain, crazy stuff, collector heaven!

I remember having a discussion with my friend years ago, while being in a videotheek. I never bothered getting a VHS player, because back when I moved out of my parents’ house it was already obvious to me that DVD was the future. But my friend and the guy behind the counter in the videotheek were like “think of all the movies that aren’t available on DVD and never will be!” I didn’t disagree, but I was like “I’ll worry about that by the time I’ve seen all movies that have been released on DVD.” And that was that.

Still… reading stuff like this, Peter, it makes me wish I had a pile of those tapes and a VHS player around. smile

Oh, that’s only like… the biggest chain we ever had in the Netherlands!

A few more scans - from Raiders to Attack of the Clones.
George Lucas’ inspired creations of Indiana Jones and Star Wars not only made blockbuster history but also led to other re-imaginings of the classic serials/pulp heroes:

And many many cheap(ish) rip-offs

Look at the tagline on this one! “the ark has been raided and the stone romanced. now, let the real adventure begin” smile Like the more recent Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, this movie also taps into another favorite hero type of the serial, the air-pilot.

Already had that last one for a while, traded it with Dan.be, the rest of them are new to my collection.

A lot of time now, so I can finaly review a lot of films

brainstorm.jpg

The revealing technological wonder where the whole film is build round is a machine that can reproduce all feelings, ideas and perceptions & register it on video, Once connected on other people’s Brain Waves, it can be reproduced. It seems like a a good idea here of making film round this story, but unfortunatly enough the characters are made of paperboard, And all the special effects can not save this film.

excaim a nice fact : three weeks before this film was finished lead actress nathalie Wood drowned . A long time It was not sure if this film would ever been releasd

bigblue.jpg

I remember seeing this film in France during a School trip . I also remember buying the Soundtrack and to be short Loved the film. So many years later & older time to see it again. And like most of the films you enjoyed as a child this one did not stand the test of time either rolleyes
The story (as far there is one ) is the rivalry between the Sicilian Enzo & the Frenchman Jaques. There is also Joanna played by Rossana Arquette, who gets pregnand by Jacques. But after 2hours of the seeing water I got a feeling I almost drowned , drowned in my sleep. The music by Eric Serra is great, but that’s the only good news. O and I love the video inlay :D
excaim  Nice fact , For some reason Twentieth Century Fox decided to dish the Serra Score & released (this 2 h version ) in the USA with a new Bill conti Score

You bet! Love Masters of the universe! smile
And War Lords looks promising.

btw. I very much liked Brainstorm. Douglas Trumbull is a special kind of guy and it shows in this movie.

And another fan of Brainstorm!
I heard Trumbull wasn’t able to film the whole script, due to Natalie Wood drowning before shooting was finished. They had to edit together what they had which accounts for the choppy pace.
Still a good film though, some amazing shots near the end…

Guys,

There’s someone trying to sell a VHS of “The Beast in Heat” (mentioned earlier in this very topic!) and has opened a topic to that effect in “General chatter”:

Looking to Sell original ‘Beast in Heat’ UK VHS - any suggestions

Thought anyone here might be interested?  cheese

The Magnificent http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206913/
Letterboxed, English dub, Dutch subs

As not unusual for a Video for Pleasure title we get an English language print in the right aspect ratio but it’s badly damaged. Sometimes dialogue get’s cut off in the middle of a sentence. This being a kungfu movie however, that doesn’t matter one bit! smile There is a lot of fun stuff in this one. It takes a while to introduce all the characters and set up a simple intrigue, but then it basically boils down to Carter Hwang (that Thunder guy from Big Trouble in Little China that looks like a cross between Bruce Lee and Arnold Schwarzenegger) teaming up with a princess against an evil general. Because this nemesis has mastered the “golden bell technique” he is almost invincible, so the two have to train their pressure point skills which leads to a nice montage in which the groundwork is laid for a satisfying final battle. Best bit: At one point the princess punches the general in the nuts without any reaction (because he is protected by the golden bell energy) on which Carter exclaims “is he a man!?!?” the priceless response of the princess “no, he is just like me!”.
