Daniel Day Lewis delivers another powerful performance, and hopefully will win his second Oscar.  I think he was robbed in 2002 when he did not win for “Gangs of New York.”  As I watched “There Will Be Blood,” it was almost like looking at a painting.  The cinematography and the soundtrack add to the atmosphere of the film.  It is probably my favorite of the five movies nominated for best picture Oscars, just edging out “Juno.”  Lewis’ speeches to the townfolk as he introduces himself and his son are the best parts of the movie.  The religious angle with the minister does not work quite as well.  But, for such a long movie, it goes by really fast.  The sheer scope of the movie reminded me of “Giant” in the way it made everything so big.  And, the ending, where there is a shot of a bowling alley for a few seconds, appeared as if it was a scene that Stanley Kubrick might shoot.  I do not think the end of the movie is as strong as the rest of the movie, but , overall, Lewis’ performance carries this movie.  It is unlike any other movie I’ve seen this year:  I was amazed that any director could film this right now because it really seems to be taking place over a hundred years ago.  It just has a different feel to it.
