I’m sure the people of the Twitch forums will know of this film, and have probably discussed it here already, but for everyone else here is the overview of who’s involved and what it’s about.
Dir: Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep)
Writer: Michel Gondry
Starring: Jack Black, Mos Def, Mia Farrow
Release Date: 25 January 2008 (USA)
Plot - A man (Black) whose brain becomes magnetized unintentionally destroys every tape in his friend’s video store. In order to satisfy the store’s most loyal renter, an aging woman with signs of dementia, the two men set out to remake the lost films, which include Back to the Future, The Lion King, and Robocop.
The plot outline of the film sounds, at first completely silly and pointless but upon further contemplation is, awesome. I am a huge fan of Gondry as a director (filmmaker) simply from Eternal Sunshine (which is in my top 100 films of all time) and from the man who created that I simply can’t pass up on his latest project. The “film about making a film (or in this case “films”)” seems to be becoming a popular trend. Reports from various film festivals have said that there are a few already made (but obviously films of lesser budget and names).
This, I dare say, is Gondry’s most “normal” venture in the world of filmmaking when compared to a film about witnessing memory erasion and one about a man’s imagination showcased quite literally. But I can guarantee this will be still as weird and wonderful as any of his other work and I, for one, have this film high up on my most anticipated list.
What are your thoughts on it?
