Arahan LE I likes..

Are YOU the one who stole that from Todd’s place? Warning: he’s still sort of pissed about it…

Good to finally see pictures of one, it was mentioned several times in the ‘old’ forum. For a while this was basically “The Ultimate Pimped Edition” of all Korean editions.
I missed out though: it was OOP before I could order.  :(

So why do Asian releases get more lavish attention than European/American discs? Is it because the larger Asian market goes for this sort of thing and the Western one prefer less flash packaging (except you gutys of course :D )? How much did those box sets set you lot back? I’m guessing they weren’t cheap…

Strangely enough, no.
The Korean domestic market for bought movies on DVD’s is lousy, collectors of them are considered weird over there. But these editions are really cheap to make, the special packaging for “Arahan” above apparently only cost a couple of thousand dollars extra for the entire run. Therefore it is sometimes worthwhile for a distributor to invest in a special package.

No, yes, no…

You pay extra for the packaging, booklets etcetera, sure, but Korean and Chinese aren’t extraordinarily expensive either like the Japanese editions. Those two Japanese “Mind-Game” editions were a staggering 250 and 110 USD!

But a normal Japanese LE might be between 60 and 130 USD, while Korean and Chinese waver between 25 and 50.

And you can always hunt for bargains. Sites like YesAsia and DVDfromKorea allow you to search for LE’s, and if you look at the list you’ll find plenty of these “pimped” editions for less than 25 USD. most of the time the problem is not price but availability, so many of them go OOP (Out Of Print) quickly…

Current Korean pimped bargains would be:

Daisy:

Dasepo naughty Girls:

Death Note/ Death Note Last Name boxset:

That last one may seem more expensive than it is: for that price you get two movies, and you can check the package on the first page of this topic in post number 13. A gorgeous set.

Yeah. Printing in Asia seems to be alot cheaper than here in the west. Plus Asians like pretty things more than we do.
The highest price for a special edition that I paid was 250 dollars for the Japanese Gamera trilogy set, which was the only way to get the films with english subtitles.

The best deal/quality release that I have in my collection is the Korean Pan’s Labyrinth set.  I think it was around the same price as the domestic release, but the packaging is very very sweet

(Unlike other folks, mine has not fallen apart or anything...still as pretty as the day I bought it)

I have that set and it is falling apart a little.  I love my The Host LE, the Forbidden Planet LE with the Robby the Robot is really cool.  I have a few Korean sets that I really like, The President’s Barber is a neat low key set, and I’m looking forward to my Secret Sunshine LE

Same here: there’s a problem with the glue in some of these, but mine is fine.

True, the korean “Pan” looks marvellous. It’s featured somewhere on the first page of this topic (post no.10) and is indeed quite cheap, even though that key-bookmark thingy is really 18 karat gold!

My Pan set is as good as the day I bought it. I’ve only watched it once and keep it in the shelve, snuggly between disc covers. I’ve got the UK release also so I’ll watch that if I get the urge.

I have the US edition, however my US disc 1 is scuffed.  I haven’t tried to play it, but it appears as though I may need to have it resurfaced.

Oh snap. This is a beauty but I think it would be unwise to get this now since there are at least two more films on the way.

Picked up this one a year or so back—no personal pics since I haven’t been able to take it out of the box yet (it’s in storage somewhere in the US):

This is another nice one that I haven’t really done anything with yet.  I wish Amazon (US) would put out some exclusives like the UK versions (have the Spiderman 3 LE on order):

Like this one as well—starting to get more of the spaghetti western SEs through xploitedcinema as well:

Sooner or later I’ll upload my Chinese R6 “Shawshank Redemption LE” pics - complete with souvenir rock hammer.

a few others here:

That Alien Quadroligy Head is really something to behold. I’m generally not too fond of these busts but the way they fitted the 9 discs in this one is pure gold, using the unusual hammerhead shape of Giger’s design to display them in a visually pleasing manner. Brilliant!

This weekend the first season of the Powerpuff Girls arrived, and I really had to laugh at what they did with the discs.
Here is the set:

So far, so normal. But if you unfold the insides, you see that the discs form Blossom’s eyes:

Well done, Warner Bros!

Yeah The Powerpuff Girls is a great set.
I picket up Ichi the Killer blood pack edition in Toronto which is great but I might have to put the disks in another case because of the difficulty to get them out of it.
I also picked up The Sting which is in a “leather” book and looks really nice. It’s part of Universals Legacy series.
This image doesn’t do it justice though.
