It’s probably a little early to ask, but I’ll try anyway.
Todd, while nothing is confirmed yet, are there any “rumors” about screenings for the Midnight Madness program?
I’m sure you aren’t at liberty to give away any information, but how about some hints? I’m bored at work and trying to get this board active again.

Grease1739 - July 10, 2008, 8:01am Has anyone tried the online Out of Town system yet?
Grease, I have used the Out of Town Selection Service for the past 4 years with great success. Do you have specific questions about it?
Regarding the Midnights, we’re only 8 days away from the official announcement. I doubt Todd can speculate because he probably knows the real lineup. I don’t have any inside info, but I’ll gladly toss in my wish list:
Martyrs (seems like closing night material)
Vinyan (could be elsewhere in festival, like Visions or Vanguard)
JCVD
Ong Bak 2 (if it’s finished)
Embodiment of Evil
The festival can’t get here soon enough.

Now only 5 days until the MM schedule is released!
I also have used the Out of Town service in the past, and last year I used the online ordering, and it worked out great. I was just curious if anyone else has used the online ordering for the lottery before.
I’m really bummed about the fact that all Elgin screenings are out of the lottery, but I saw about 5 movies there last year, so I am ready for a change of pace.(I’ve yet to see any screenings at Jackman Hall or the Al Green Theater).
Martyrs has me intrigued, but I just hope it isn’t all gore and nothing left to the imagination.
JCVD might warrant a look, and I imagine with the MM crowd it would be a great screening.
I’m still waiting for some film’s announcement to jump out at me. It usually happens by this point each year, but I can’t say I’m terribly excited about much yet.
So far this is a short list of the movies I’m most interested in, if anyone cares
Un conte de Noël (A Christmas Tale)
Happy-Go-Lucky(a change of pace for Mike Weir)
Gomorrah (Could this be a less sexy Goodfellas?)

I’m very curious about this lineup as well.
Ok Todd, now that the lineup is announced, can you confirm when the schedule will be released?
I really hope “Martyrs” isn’t the closing night film, b/c I’ll be out of town by then!
43 days!!

1st scheduled dates are listed right below the picture on their site and easy to miss.
Looks like JCVD kicks it off and Chocolate closes it out. Martyrs first screening is on Wednesday, Sep. 10th.

Man it’s dead on these boards in comparison to past years.
Anyone have a short....err...long list of movies they want to see yet?
Here is mine, but I’ll only be in town for 6 days, so I’m sure scheduling will scratch a few off my list right away.
The Burning Plain(Amores Peros, 21 Grams and Babel...this guy is on a roll)
Un conte de Noël (A Christmas Tale)
Gomorrah
Happy-Go-Lucky (I didn’t know Mike Leigh could do comedy, but the buzz has been great)
Appaloosa
Synecdoche, New York (I can’t pass up Kaufman)
Slumdog Millionaire(An urban “love story” from the director of Trainspotting...this should be interesting.)
A Woman in Berlin
JCVD
Martyrs(I hope it’s just not all gore and no substance)
Everlasting Moments
Real Time(One of my most anticipated)
White Night Wedding (I loved Jar City last year, so I’m interested to see what Kormakur does with this.)
Kisses(sounds darker than the title hints at)
Vinyan(another one I’m really interested in)
Gigantic (I’m interested to see if Paul Dano can continue delivering great performances...could this be the next Juno/Little Miss Sunshine?)
Last Stop 174
Me and Orson Welles (I just hope this doesn’t turn out to be teen trash)
The Wrestler(I don’t know why, but I feel like this movie is being hyped a little too much. I hope I’m not disappointed.)
Anyone else?

I’m really looking forward to BLINDNESS, MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, THE BROTHERS BLOOM, VINYAN and JCVD. But most importantly, I’m stoked for discoveries and mind-melts in the Discovery/Vanguard/Visions sections. That’s where the surprises inevitably are. The surprises are what make festival going a must for me.

I’m most excited about THE BROTHERS BLOOM and SYNECHDOCHE, NEW YORK (yeah, the bad reviews can’t keep me away from the Kaufman). As for the rest, there’s almost too much this year. TOKYO SONATA and A CHRISTMAS TALE both got great reviews at Cannes; TONY MANERO looks dark and twisted; VINYAN and SAUNA look interesting; THE DUNGEON MASTER sounds fascinating; the two stop-motion films sound intriguing, especially EDISON & LEO, which is written by George Toles (Guy Maddin’s frequent screenwriter; and so on and so on. And there’s no telling what will get announced Tuesday (I’m hoping for TOKYO! at the very least). Anyway, that’s what I like so far.

BTW, I have a blog for the festival, if anyone wants to check it out. Crunchy Squirrel Goes to Toronto

Crunchy,
I just checked out your blog. Nice job, and I’ll be sure to bookmark it....anything to keep me entertained during downtime at work. I actually called the box office and asked about the donor priority, and they told me that donors have always gotten priority, but this is the 1st year they are advertising it....the rep didn’t seem like he was too thrilled that TIFF decided to announce this, b/c it sounds like they have taken alot of calls about it.
Has anyone ever attended a Mavericks session? If so, how long do they last, and can you use 1 lottery ticket for a session, or do you have to purchase them seperately?
16 more days!!

Here are about three dozen films that leap out at me (based on country, director, limited info) until the more information is forthcoming.
Obviously a huge chunk of these films, in particular the programmes of Documentaries, Contemporary World Cinema, Discoveries, Canada First, Visions and Vanguard flicks will require full catalogue descriptions come August 29 (and likely a fair bit of time with the IMDb) before I know what I want to see. However, Based on my knowledge of what is up and coming, here are the titles that I’ve carved out on first go around along with an ultra-brief reasoning.
Burn after Reading (Coen Brothers) - Comedy swing for those Big Lebowski fences
The Good The Bad The Weird (Kim Jee-Woon) - Kimchi-Western from S.Korea
Three Monkeys (Nuri Bilge Ceylan) - HD-digital gorgeous dark drama
Public Enemy Number One (Jean-Francois Richet) - Gangster biopic starring Vincent Cassel and Ludivine Sagnier
Tokyo Sonata (Kiyoshi Kurosawa) - Very Dark Drama from Japan horror-meister
Sky Crawlers - (Mamoru Oshii) - latest prestige feature anime
Vinyan (Fabrice du Welz) - Sci-fi flick from the director of Calvaire
Ashes of Time Redux - (Wong Kar-Wai) - re-edit of sumptuously odd 1988 Kung-Fu melodrama
Blindness (Fernando Meirelles) - Latest from City of God director - Starring Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Gael Garcia Bernal and Danny Glover
Genova (Michael Winterbottom) - latest from Tristram Shandy, 24-Hour Party People, Code 46 director.
Che (Steven Soderbergh) - 4 hour biopic of Che Guevara
Brothers Bloom (Rian Johnson) - Caper Comedy starring Adrian Brody and Rachel Weisz.
Happy-Go-Lucky (Mike Leigh) - Improved dramedy? Latest from one of my favourite Brits.
Synecdouche, New York (Charlie Kaufman) - the writer of Being John Malkovich and starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman- I’m there
The Wrestler (Darren Aronofsky) - Requiem for a Dream/The Fountain director starring Mickey Rourke. Yes, it’s a wrestling picture
Zack & Miri Make a Porno (Kevin Smith) - latest Kevin Smith is worth going to for the Q&A;32 Short Films about Glenn Gould (Francois Girard) - Time to finally catch up with this Canadian classic
Flame & Citron (Ole Christian Madsen) - I love this Danish director. That’s all I know.
Summer Hours (Olivier Assayas) - Juliette Binoche in a family drama by another favourite director.
Jerichow (Christian Petzold) - know nothing about this, but loved directors previous film YELLA
Toronto Stories vs. New York, New York - this years pair of ‘anthology films. I might do one
White Night Wedding (Baltasar Kormakur) - My favourite Icelander is back with a new film
Pontypool (Bruce McDonald) - New Bruce is good - and this is a horror flick!
Sauna (Antti-Jussi Annila) - Crazy Finnish horror
From the Midnite section:
Acolytes (Jon Hewitt)
The Burrowers (J.T. Petty)
Chocolate (Prachya Pinkaew) - Ong Bak with girl!
Deadgirl (Marcel Sarmiento, Gadi Harel )
Eden Log (Franck Vestiel) - French Sci-Fi!
JCVD (Mabrouk El Mechri) - Being Jean Claude Van Damme! Should be a treat!
Martyrs (Pascal Laugier)
Not Quite Hollywood (Mark Hartley) - Aussie Exploitation Doc!
Sexykiller (Miguel Martí)

I’m impressed with all those canadian selections there. I actually skipped the bulk of the Can-con at the fest this year, sort of a first for me in a while

I need a ticket to the Midnight screening of JCVD. Anyone got an extra?
Also, I will be out of town Sep 12-13 (Sexykiller, Chocolate), so I have Midnight Madness single tickets I can’t use. Anyone need them?
Johnny
